I wish the book wasn't as supernatural OR as much about the romance, but what can I do... Not a bad story, but not that much of my preferences either. It was very well-written though, the house and its magic felt unrealistically realistic! my favourite parts were those located outside of the house though (as in, the parts where the book lived up to its name - by also being mexican and not only gothic).

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is one of the best books I've ever read. Seriously, this inter-text woven with gothic lore, fantasy hijinks, a dash of romance, and riveting plot twists make for an excellent book. I haven't binged a book this hard in a while!

This book is a wild, roller coaster of a ride full that I couldn't put down. I'm highly impressed with Silvia's incredible writing style, her ability to make the book feel so fast but also move at a pace that only gives us a bit of information at a time. There is foreshadowing galore, and if you're smart enough you'll be able to pick up on the subtle hints the book throws at you...

Overall, this is one of the greatest books I've read in a very long time. It's spooky, it's weird, and it's wild. I absolutely love it.

Sure, it's gorey. And has incest. And has sexual harssment/assault. And a lot of other bad things... But this is the type of fantastical horror I expect out of an incredible gothic writer.

Five out of five stars.

I didn’t know if I’d like this book because Gods of Jade and Shadow just didn’t do it for me, but I loved this. It had the perfect amount of twists and turns and mystery. It reminded me a lot of the Picture of Dorian Gray. I loved Noemí, I thought she was strong, brave and fun. Definitely recommend this book!

Moreno-Garcia presents a lush and atmospheric excursion into the gothic genre. Noemí Taboada
is a wealthy strong-willed Mexican socialite who finds herself playing the uncanny hero after receiving
a bewildering letter from her cousin, Catalina. The letter propels Noemí to travel to her cousin’s new
home, High Place – an isolated English-style mansion – to check on Catalina’s mysterious behavior.
Noemi is greeted by moldy wallpaper and in-laws bent on eugenics. Her stay at High Place only feels
more and more menacing with each passing night as the unimaginable horrors become more and more
richly detailed. Recommended for avid horror or suspense readers who just finished and loved “The
Death of Jane Larence” by Caitlin Startling or “Tripping Arcadia” by Kit Mayquist for the creepy
underpinnings and culturally diverse characters.
