“Dreams often revealed one's greatest vulnerability; dreams were doors that led into hearts and minds and souls and secrets.”

Dreams Lie Beneath
Rebecca Ross
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

THE REALM OF AZENOR HAS BEEN CURSED.

GENRE:
YA, Fantasy

BLURB:
Every new moon, magic flows from the nearby mountain and brings nightmares to life. Only magicians, who served as territory wardens, stand between people and their worst dreams.

Clementine Madigan is ready to follow in her father's footsteps as the warden of Hereswith, even though she yearns to study the wilder side of magic. Instead, she must record towns-people's nightmares so she and her father are prepared for the danger of the new moon.

When her father's domain is challenged by two magicians, Clementine is drawn into a century-old conflict. She seeks revenge on one of the brothers who dueled with her father, but as she gets closer to the handsome young magician, secrets begin to rise. And Clementine, once keen on vengeance; must unit with her rival and face the realm's curse, which seems to be haunting her every turn.

THOUGHTS:
I began reading this book in February 2024 and just finished it. Despite not finding the story difficult to follow or excessively lengthy, I experienced a reading slump due to tight schedules. However, as I pieced together the scenarios in my mind, I found the book to be amazing. Its unique magic system and likable characters, particularly the character development of the female main character, Clementine, upon encountering the male main character, Phelan, as a magician and the son of a countess, stood out to me. Betrayals and numerous secrets unfold as the story progresses, and the unexpected plot twists kept me engaged throughout. Importantly, the book taught me to pay attention to the nuances of character banter, the author's writing style, and the underlying messages conveyed in every word.

This experience has left me eager to explore more books and discover impactful phrases that can serve as lessons, create impact, and even change lives.

"Purpose can be found in unexpected places."

It had some interesting world building and was well paced in terms of action and twists, but I didn’t really feel any attachment to the characters so (while I was curious) I didn’t really care what happened at the end. The main romance was just meh too. Wasn’t invested in it. But I’d still say it’s well-written and a fun read despite that.

Overall the book built very well, from the story to the characters to the ending. But in a sense, it felt lacking something, It's definitely a story one will remember and enjoy nevertheless it felt dragging, The characters needed a deeper feeling so I could connect more to them.
even though part of the ending was predictable, still I was pretty satisfied with it.

** I know a lot of people hold this book highly, so I am sure it depends on the genre one prefers.

EASY 4.5

I absolutely loved this book. More so then divine rivals (which I loved and made me want more RR in my life hence reading this baby). This book has every fav fantasy trope of mine (female vengeance, huge plot twists, a minimal romance plot that was enemies to lovers) all written in this beautiful way of Rebecca’s. Clem is such a strong-minded, clever mc who takes no crap and does what she wants and thinks is best (initially in a selfish way but you love it) GAH SO GOOD
and just a stand-alone so literally less than 500 pages for an entire story is kind of nice every once in a while!!!

Was an interesting story and the romance was sweet, but I had too many questions throughout the whole story that were left unanswered. Not my favorite from Ross. Her later writings feel much more put together.
