Its ok. Not nearly as good as the first novella in my opinion or the main books in the series.

“I still hoped for peace, though I no longer knew how to achieve it. The boy who dreamed of peace on Delos long ago was dead, indeed, and though I bore his name and blood alike, I was not him.”

I love a good novella that is set in a world I love.

Queen Amid Ashes feels a lot different from the previous novella, The Lesser Devil, set in the Sun Eater universe. While that previous novella was more focused on a character and the plot didn’t pick up until the later half, this one was way more plot focused and action based.

Hadrian and the Red Company are on the planet Thagura and they discover that the Cielcin have already invaded. I always love getting to see a different part of a speculative world, and that was just what this was. Though I will say that we didn’t get to see much of this place due to it being invaded.

There is not much to say about this because it really was about an invasion and Hadrian and his crew trying to figure out what happened and who is to blame. Lady Malyan is someone who we meet and I would have loved to get to know her more because from the little bit of her that we got, I was intrigued.

What was the most interesting was that we learned so much more about the Cielcin. We find out why they seem to be on a warpath right now. I know that we will delve more into that in the next book, but man does it have me super intrigued.

Overall, this was a solid little novella. It moved along at a good pace and never lost my interest. I do think I liked this a smidge more than The Lesser Devil, but not by much since they have the same rating from me. I do recommend reading this though if you’re a fan of the series.
