I liked the premise for this book and I was interested enough to finish it. Some of the plot bothered me though. I was surprised about who she ended up with at the end as I didn’t really look at their relationship as a love thing, it didn’t feel like that was happening between them as he wasn’t really up front with her ever about his motivations and feelings. I don’t understand how they fell in love. One thing that really bugged me throughout the whole story also was Willis’s use of the term “by-blow” as Rachel considers herself the illegitimate daughter. I understand this is a correct term but did she always have to throw it in every single time Rachel was thinking about her father? It got very annoying. I also would have liked to see something more with her finding out she was legitimate. It would’ve been interesting to see something at the end of the book between Rachel and her half sister Olivia since they did get to know each other. I would’ve liked to see John get his comeuppance and Olivia come into her own. The book wasn’t even 300 pages and I felt that.

Nothing spectacular; nothing terrible. I was expecting it to be a bit more dramatic.

Picked this up and finished it the same night... Different from Ms. Willig' other books in terms of writing style but just as compelling.

Rachel is a young woman working as a nanny in France when she is notofied her mother in England is dying of influenza. She rushes back to England but is too late, her mother has died. Rachel has memories of her father who supposedly died when she was 4 but as she is cleaning out her mother's small rented cottage she finds evidence that perhaps he isn't deceased. The story follows Rachel as she becomes Vera, one of the Smart Young Things who party til they drop night after night so that she might become acquainted with her sister and, in turn, her father. But things don't always go as you plan and often there's more to the story. I didn't see the surprising twist at the end.

I wavered between a 3 and a 4. I read the book in one sitting, it was good. But it won't stand out in my mind a week from now. Everything seemed too easy for the heroine. She was a governess, who found out she was the illegitimate daughter of an earl. She decided she was going to become a part of the Bright Young Things and get access to him so she could confront him. Seconds later, she meets filthy rich Simon, who has an agenda of his own and fronts the money for the whole thing. He has never met her before. He puts her up in his mom's flat, introduces her to the right people...blah blah blah.

It would be like if all of a sudden I decided that I was going to hang out with celebrities, and I turn a corner and Johnny Depp is there and says, "Yeah, I'll help you."

You must be prepared to suspend your disbelief!
