I really beautiful rendering of the autobiography as they include the audio from his own speeches directly - makes it so much more powerful to hear his oratory. Definitely did a justice to the book that reading it yourself does not give.

Everyone should read this.

I learned a lot from this book -- background stories about all the strategies and negotiating that went into the work of the Civil Rights movements, the conflicts between King and the Black Power movement, the fact that King lived in Chicago for a time and found it much more difficult to get people to rally behind his nonviolent message in the North. I was left with a lot of questions that made me regret that this wasn't a true autobiography -- just a collection of writings edited together in order -- and a lot of frustration that the road still feels so long.

As an autobiography which has been assembled rather than written, this has some flaws: it is repetitive in places, and less personal than perhaps we would like. It doesn't do all that much to humanise Dr. King, which is not necessarily a bad thing. But Clayborne Carson does the important job of illustrating the evolution of King's philosophy; Dr. King's writings on Black Power and the Vietnam war are not as well-known as his earlier speeches and writings, but they are key to understanding his vision. I have read very widely in Dr. King's life and yet I was unfamiliar with the text of his speeches on the war, which are anguished, eloquent, and exactly on point. One can only imagine how Dr. King might have helped to change public perception of the war had he lived. The book is a must-read.

The last chapter of the speech he gave the night before he died will give you chills and leave you in awe. An amazing man who loved Jesus and fought so hard for so many through his non-violent principles.

I'm glad you didn't sneeze!

I have learned about Dr Martin Luther King. I have seen speeches and documentaries but I have never read in his own words his thoughts on events, actions and people. It gave me more insight on the man, not the white washed legend we like to celebrate.
