Reading along with the chapter-by-chapter podcast Moby Dick Energy, hosted by Talia Levin.

At one chapter a week, this is going to take me a while.

I had trouble with the dated language at first (which is 100% my fault and also why I need to read more classic lit) but eventually I got in the groove. Also had trouble with all the many many chapters on whales u til I started to love them. Really interesting to actually read this bc obviously “white whale” is such a common term for obsession that I knew this story but actually reading it and getting to know the characters and the interests of Melville is great. Really interesting to see the incredibly-dated-but-probably-progressive-for-the-time view of different races and on sailing and on different parts of the world. I love Ishmael. Overall: I had a great time (a whale of a time?).

The classic tale of how obsession can eat away at us if we let it.

The adaptation is really nice but the story is nothing special. Only check it out since I've heard so much about Moby Dick and then Rodney M'kay was scared of it so wanted to see what's the big deal.

have you ever seen a whale,
with a harpoon-filled tail,
down by the bay?

i should hope not, because that would be a terrible way to try to capture the noblest fish in the ocean, especially when moby dick provides such a clear, step-by-step guide to the art of whaling, suitable for novice and expert alike.

full of humor (counterintuitively dry in nature, considering the maritime setting), wonder, and infectious enthusiasm for cetaceans.

many complaints here about "not enough plot," well, who wants plot? as for me, i want whales.
