I’ve been out of high school for a decade and looking back I can only remember reading two or three books for classes. I sometimes get this urge to read those books now which I probably should have read then, so I got around to this. I’ve heard stories about how boring this book is or gets in parts, but I was fully entertained for most of it. The story is good and memorable (although its pretty well known by now), but I liked the added information even more. I think the cetology chapter is one of the best (I mention this because it seems to be the chapter most people hate); I even got on the internet afterwards and spent a few hours searching out more information about the different types of whales. If anything the extra information about whaling adds much more to the story than takes away from the pace (besides, the whaling information is often very much part of the story). Anyways, this book was good and I’m glad that I got around to reading it. I might pick it up and read it again in a few years.

Such beautiful language. Such incredible representations, objects, their referents all swirling with meaning, like the flotsam of the lances on the second day of the chase. The language is joyous. Even the "Whale Facts" chapters.

DID NOT FINISH

The sheer amount of descriptions about ship related tools and mechanisms bored me out of my mind. Also, it was not what I expected; I thought the obsession with the whale and the madness that surrounds that obsession would be the central theme of the novel, but I read and read until I grew bored and still no signs of madness and obsession.

A phenomenally funny book. Everything in there had a purpose. Loved learning about the fish known as whales.

While there were moments of great writing, I found most of the book to be a bore.

Net 0 new information about whales! Definitely lots of new information about Moby-Dick or, The Whale, however.
