This was a very slow build up. It starts of in 1972 then goes back in time to the 1920's-30's for the rest of the story. I loved Monkey pants and Chona but my favorite character was Dodo. There are some subjects that are discussed that could ve trigger warnings. I liked how the author draws attention on truths about race and prejudice.

This is a wonderful book. The story is woven together so well and seems like an honest portrayal of an intersection of diverse lives.
