I adored this story about a little bird named Mel who has enough confidence in herself to try flying for the first time, even though everyone around her worries and doesn’t think she can do it. I was a little turned off at first by the orientation of the book, but when you make the full turn, it’s actually a pretty fun and clever way to format the story.

This is a great read-aloud with lots to discuss and look at. Such a FUN book! (kingfishers, setting goals)

I’ve been working my way through the books I picked up from the library that are getting a lot of Caldecott buzz and so far I haven’t been overly impressed with any of them, but then this morning I sat down three more and all three of them were fantastic!

The unusual (but very effective) use of the orientation of the book in this one could definitely factor in to make it one of the Honor books, if not the winner. Such a delight to read this!

A very special book about a very special bird who falls before she can fly...and knows she can do it the entire time. It's also about all the important friends who try to catch her and cheer her on on her way.
Adding to the fun is the book's layout-to follow the story, the reader must turn the book to follow Mel's decent, dive, and ascent back home.
