A funny and adorable book about a very brave kingfisher bird who takes his first flight ever. The fun part of this book is that it is told in a vertical format that switches sides halfway through!

Mel Fell is an appropriate book for student K-3. Lets them know that feeling scared is valid, while still being brave and continuing to try!

For: bird lovers; readers looking for a book about trying new things; readers looking for a book with interesting illustrations and nontraditional formatting.

Possible red flags: characters in peril.

What a creative way to present info about the kingfisher! It has a bit of a suspense aspect for children and ends in a very inspiring way.

One of my favorite picture books that I’ve ever read! I loved the sweet helpful animals that were with Mel on her big day, the courage Mel showed by trusting herself, and the really neat formatting of the story. Highly recommend!!

Caldecott Winner, Age level: Kindergarten - 2nd grade, published on February 2nd, 2021. This story is about a brave baby kingfisher that wants to learn to fly. Despite the hesitations of her siblings, she decided to try to fly but ended up falling past the other animals that lived around her. Mel fell into the water below and grabbed a fish, all while finally developing the ability to fly back up to her nest! In the story, Mel took a huge risk to try and test her wings to fly. I think that this could be a very valuable lesson to teach my students about. Taking risks and facing your fears can lead to great reward! Students will also be very engaged by the unusual setup of the book with the advanced visuals and changing direction of the text. I think that this book is very simple but engaging at the same time, while providing them with encouragement and confidence that they are capable of doing hard things.
