The Marvel Star Wars line is amazing right now. This particular title does a great balancing act of jumping from the Clone Wars era to the first flames of rebellion prior to New Hope.

This is a mess and I still hate the artwork. I’m just not enough of a Kanan fan to appreciate those, I guess. And I do like Depa Billaba, but I would’ve rather read a story with her as the MC rather than as a side character not really fleshed out.

The whole Rebels timeline background storyline made it seem like Kanan’s the only one who can actually defeat stormtroopers, when we’ve seen time and time again that every member of that squad can do that. It was a bit weird and OOC.

I did like that scene between Kasmir and Kleeve at the end. Which begs the question: how are they still together? My answer is that they’re probably married at this point.

Não sendo genial, esta é plenamente aceitável.

Not as fun as the first volume. The artwork is still great.

The flashback is complete as Greg Weisman brings the 12-issue exploration of Kanan's Jedi past to its conclusion here, with another look at Kanan's time in the Jedi order and the adventures he has while learning of his opportunity to become Depa Bilaba's Padawan. As with Vol. 1, the arc is broken up into two sections: a 5-issue arc that deals with Kanan's young life, and a sixth epilogue issue that satisfies the context of the the flashback.

This time around, the story takes us back to where issue #1 began, a sort of flashback of the flashback, and ultimately gets to the point at which Kanan's adventures as a Padawan began. We see him dealing with the stressors of Jedi training, of the adversity he goes through as a lesser candidate, and of the dangers to the Jedi Temple during the Clone Wars, and that makes for an interesting, if character-light, story to explore. The action is steady and as the story changes locations to begin the tie-in to the beginning of the series with the Kaller story, it gets a little strained and hurried. Larraz's art begins to look more and more anime-y and goofy, but the story begins to connect to other media (specifically the TV show and novels) in expert form, which for me made it worth seeing through to the end.

There's nothing here to recommend this as an absolute day 1 purchase (I'm reading it in single issues), but it's a good Star Wars tale and good for completionists and fans of Star Wars Rebels, and will make a nice read for those who are looking for more stories about the Clone Wars era in this age of reliving the original trilogy and building the context for the new one.

Spring 2020 (March);

From Live-read:

Yeessss, continuing my favorite theme of the first trilogy reading set. Billaba talking about she thinks it's a mistake the Jedi ever took on military ranks. || OMG NO. They were so happy in this second right before Order 66. || This baby. || Also, this baby is so cute and his artwork is, too,

OMGOSH. That last splash page, with Baby!Padawn him, SpacePirate!Kid him, and grown up Rebels!Him. That's a lovely crossshot of the three. | I'm so glad #6 slides us back into current time, with reference to first storytime, too. Flashbacks, but, also, MOAR REBELS FAMILY. I love you, JediSmugglerSpaceDad, stop trying to die.

I really liked this Kanan series. It definitely shed some light on Kanan's background. I really like him in Rebels, so it was neat to see him as a padawan, and also to see Depa Billaba.
