What I read: You Have a Match by Emma Lord

Why I picked it up: I’ve appreciated Emma Lord’s books before so I’m working my way through her back catalogue.

How I read it: On Audio (and I downloaded the Kindle book too to read back and forth, but I never dove into the ebook) at 1.75x speed over the course of this week walking and driving

What it’s about: Abby and her friends do a DNA test when he’s hoping to find his biological family and instead she ends up with a new sister. There’s a camp scene, an unexpected parent trap, and a bit of a love story that was curtailed by their other best friend when she got scared she was going to be the 3rd wheel. It’s a great finding yourself and coming of age story.

What I liked: I appreciated the sisters finding each other and becoming friends.

What I disliked: There’s a thing in adoptions that gives birth/first mothers a grace period – and that wasn’t honored in this story, but I think it should be talked about more – it’s beautiful and hard to give your child to another family through adoption, both can be true.

Genre: Young Adult, finding oneself, coming of age.

Rating & Recommendation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ and absolutely, especially if you’re intrigued by adoption and found family stories like I am.

Earlier this year I read Emma Lord’s debut novel Tweet Cute and was absolutely obsessed with it! I’ve definitely been recommending it to pretty much everyone I know. After finishing Tweet Cute, I told myself that I needed to get my hands on an ARC of her next book and a huge thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for making it possible and bringing me some MUCH NEEDED joy and excitement nine months into a global pandemic!

Emma Lord has this amazing ability to write books that you literally do not want to put down. Once starting one of her books you just want to keep reading and fully submerge yourself into the story and characters that she’s created. That’s how I felt with Tweet Cute, and You Have a Match is no exception. Her stories are so fun and joyful with characters that are so likable and relatable, while also having lots of depth emotionally, something that I sometimes think is missing in YA literature.

I loved these characters so so so much. I felt really connected to both Abby and Savvy; I saw different sides of myself in them which I think is so cool because they’re really two sides of the same coin. I felt represented in Leo and Mickey through their heritage (huge thank you to Emma Lord for having Filipino love interests, we LOVE to see it) and their love of food/cooking – I mean I’m more of a baker, but still. I also just loved all of the little mentions of Filipino culture, it just made my heart so incredibly happy and I would like a book all about Leo and Mickey’s friendship and cooking adventures. I loved Finn. I thought he was a great character and was a really good friend to Abby when she needed someone to talk to and just kind of let loose. Connie having biannual Legally Blonde watches was the biggest mood and she really was a good friend even if she made some misguided choices. I thought that all of the characters were really well written and fleshed out.

After a slow-to me-start, it became the perfect love-friend-family story.

Nice easy read. Too many characters to keep track of but it was enjoyable.

This book is such a great addition to the YA universe! Emma Lord does such a good job of incorporating a love story while really the story is so much more than that - there’s complicated family relationships, growing up, juggling friendships, school/future planning pressures, and, most importantly, her struggle with figuring out who she is and why she is the way she is. Fun setting, great characters, interesting storylines. Highly recommend for a fun but complex YA book!

I love Emma Lord! She is one of my favorite YA authors, and I'll read anything she writes, but this was probably my least favorite books of hers. It is light on the romance (not necessarily bad, but not what I was expecting), and the family drama is the central story line.

I actually thought the way the plot unfolded with Abby's secret sister was well-done, and I was intrigued by the twists and turns. I kept wanting to know, why did Abby's parents give up her sister for adoption? And why didn't they tell Abby?

But the romantic story line frustrated me. It could have been solved by a single conversation, but the drama kept getting dragged out, and the more it continued, the less believable it was.

Anyhow, I still enjoyed this book, still raced through it, and still can't wait for the next book I read by Emma Lord!
