I haven't read a paranormal book in a hot second and I love the demigod take in this one. I love how Alexis has "wards" she takes care of and I'm excited to see more of this world and her powers.
I will say that for a 400+ page book, not a lot happened. I'm currently reading book 2 of the series so hopefully this is not an issue again.

I actually enjoyed this one even though there was no real sexy times and not much happened for how long the book was but I was interested in the characters and I liked them. This is a world of people with magic and people without. The people have different levels of magic. The more powerful your magic, the more powerful you are in society. Alexis has always made it seem like she is not very powerful but she has no idea just how powerful she is. Kieran almost runs over Alexis and immediately feels the power of her magic and he needs to know all about her. Luckily he is from a powerful family and can easily find out about her. They have an attraction to each other but not much happens with that in this book, hopefully the next. Kieran does need Alexis' help though so he is trying his hardest to have her help him while he helps her in return. I liked the characters and there is a lot of humor in the book. I would like to see how the characters' stories continue.
I’ve had this book sitting on my bookshelf since I got it from The Arcane Society and finally got out of my book slump.
While this book wasn’t huge on action or romance it was a solid intro into a new world that seems like it will be massive.
It is a lot of world building and character introductions and growth but these are the types of reads I enjoy. Especially slow burn! I hate when insta love comes into play so even though there is clearly lust, there are still those boundaries in place.
Alexis is a strong willed character who is super caring to those in her care and the spirits needing her help. She tries to stay on the down low but her mouth usually gets her into trouble. Especially after almost being rundown by a sexy man in a fast car. She doesn’t let his looks deter her, she’s a fighter after all.
Kieran can’t let go of the mouthy woman who he feels power off of but can’t explain it. He is the type to NEED to know about people and everything that they are. Alexis is no exception, in fact she may even be an obsession. She doesn’t know who he is and has no problem fighting him on every turn. He’s in it for the chase as much as his need for her too.
Again, slow burn and world building is high in this book and I’m excited to get to the next!

Unexpectedly good
I had no idea what I was going into with this book. I chose it entirely off the title and the cover, but wow it blew me away. The characters are complex, the plot is building up for a good sequel and the world building happened so slowly and so we’ll that it all naturally clicked in my head without any of the confusion that sometimes comes in these types of books.

Can’t wait to see what adventures these characters get into! I like the relationship the h and her wards. Looking forward to the next book!

This doesn't get 4 stars because some of the Irishisms in it were eyerolling.
Also, we all know Guinness doesn't travel at all well so I can say with a some level of certainty that someone who has lived in Ireland the majority of their life (Kieran) would not drink Guinness in America. Speaking Kieran, that spelling is just wrong and kind of annoys me every time I see it. Ciarán/Ciaran is the norm here and I've honestly never met an Irish Kieran. English ones yes, no Irish ones though. I'm sure there are a few knocking about but I've never personally met one!
There were more issues, I won't get into them. What I will say is that I always go into books with Irish folklore or characters that are written by non-Irish authors with a certain level of skepticism. I mean you have to, they never get it right.
Luckily the story and characters were fun. Alexis is my kind of heroine and I love that Kieran is ridiculously protective but knows he is unreasonable. It's hard to be cross with him! :D
Oh, I was close to taking a star off for 'coont'. I'm choosing to ignore the whole thing. Let us call it a brand new curse word that's never before been used and is used in this fantasy world of demigods!!
