I read some of Breene's later works and loved them. The characters were fun and engaging, the world was interesting, and the plot was solid. I got this for free from the kindle store and was excited to give it a read.

The characters are fun and engaging, I really fell in love with Daisy and Mordecai, Alexis' adopted children / siblings, I even liked Alexis. I liked Alexis until she met Kieran.

Spoiler Once Alexis meets Kieran she turns into a complete and utter moron with no sense and less survival instinct. At one point her 'wards', who are both teenagers, explain to her all the reasons why being around a stalker, because Kieran stalks her, is bad and dangerous and creepy. She agrees, and then goes around ignoring sense and reason. She's so busy being enamored of him, being lost in his dreamy eyes and sexy body, that she ignores not only good advice, but her wards, who she claims to love and sacrifice for. It's incredibly frustrating.

The plot is great though, and I was genuinely curious about Alexis' power, and the ghost plot. I was, in fact, so interested in the plot and the Alexis' kids, that I picked up book two, despite not liking Alexis at all.

It was a short, entertaining read, but I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you're super into the urban fantasy / romance genre.

Edit: I originally gave this book three stars, but after considering, decided to bump it down to two because...
Spoiler of how stupid Alexis is when it comes to her love of some creep. It's not even love, it's infatuation and lust. He's a creepy, stalking, bully who ignores her wishes and desires, does whatever he wants without thought for consequence, and manipulates the shit out of Alexis. And yet, any time she might get angry (rightfully) or think to stand up for herself (as she should) she looks at him and his sheer perfect, beautiful self turns her into a drooling idiot. I get that the author has to move the plot along, but there are better ways to do it, and this just feels like lazy writing. Which sucks because I genuinely like reading Breene's books. I just can't get behind a female character that is supposed to be tough, who makes such poor decisions because someone is attractive. Yeah, we've all done stupid things when we see someone attractive or powerful, but she does it over and over and over again despite pretty much everyone else telling her not to, to the point where it might be bad for the two kids she's raising and claims to love. Anyway, end rant

Kost nix (kindle unlimited). Einfache Kost und teilweise lustig.

I wasn’t a fan of the world building or the characters.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out this wasn't just a run-of-the-mill steamy romance, there was actual story and character development. The main character feels very real and not just the insert-your-personality-here-and-be-lusted-after type. I love the idea of all the different types of magic and the world that was created for them. It was very well put together. Also, once you find out the main character's thing, it makes you want to go back and read from the beginning to look for how you could have missed it.

The switch between first and third person was a little rough to get used to at first and I found the editing nerd in me trying to find where it was done incorrectly, but it wasn't. Overall a very good read and it makes me want to read the others.

Read this in one day.

I am reading Breene's Level Up series and I love it, and I thought this would be great diversion while waiting for book 8 in that series.

It has similarities, but with less humor. Engaging characters and a bit more spicy than the Levling Up series is.

Starting book 2 first thing in the AM

Such a great series!

I love this series. I’ve read it over and over and it gets better with every re-read. It’s full of humor and snark, action, it has surprising twists and turns. This book is a great start to the series and it just gets better. Definitely don’t miss this one!

I’m not really sure how to feel about this one. I liked it, but also, didn’t like it. I was confused throughout a lot of it.

Not much happened in this book and not much was resolved by the end of it. The plot isn't interesting enough to keep reading in the series.

I could just see it. I’d strut around the streets with the little beauty on my arm, swinging my shoulders in time with my bag. Maybe I’d swing my hips, too, if I could muster the body control. I’d keep my chin high and stride long, rather than scurrying around important people who demanded their space. Why? Because I’d be an important person. I’d be the person other people scurried from.
With shaking hands, I wrestled the supple leather strap from the hook, shoving the other (though still unaffordable) bags out of the way.
“Oh my God,” I whispered.
I, Alexis Price, was holding a Burberry buckle medium tote…in pink.

Thats how the book starts... And where I stopped reading it. I don't understand how a bag has any such an impact and I'm highly annoyed of books where woman are only thinking about what a person is wearing. What a bummer - at least it was on the first two pages!

I’ll be honest - the title almost scared me off. I gave the book a chance obviously. This was amazing. Great story. I loved the characters. Fantastic.
