Rating: 4 stars.
Genre(s): adult paranormal romance, urban fantasy.
Overall impression: I thought I was going to dnf the series based on the first few chapters. The foreshadowing of the poor FMC ending up with a rich MMC was just way too overkill - she was literally gushing over designer handbags thinking this was the life she was born to have, whilst needing to buy the cheapest blanket possible and the only one she could afford for her sick adopted child. Luckily, the tone calmed down a lot and I got swept up in the urban fantasy/paranormal story. The FMC had some pretty cool powers and I liked that the MMC took the time to investigate her properly before seeking out her help to put his mother's soul to rest. They had some instant attraction but I could tell that this was going to be a great slow-burn romance. I can't wait to see how the rest of the series plays out!
Tropes:
➵ Spirit whisperer FMC
➵ Seeking out souls
➵ Hidden identity
➵ Demigod MMC
➵ Slow-burn romance
➵ Opposites attract
➵ Rich MMC x Poor FMC
➵ Adopted children
➵ Found family
➵ Happy-for-now (HFN)
⤷ Plot:
Honestly book 1 and 2 could have been combined and condensed. The MMC spent most of the book investigating the FMC and deciding whether or not he wanted to trust and work with her. The FMC spent most of the book trying to avoid him and keep her wards safe. The ending was really predictable and finished on a mild cliffhanger.
⤷ Characters:
The FMC pissed me off at the start with her obsession over brands despite going to the shops with limited time and money to get necessities for her sick ward. The actions just didn't fit with the image the author was trying to paint, which made it really hard to relate to or like the character. Luckily, this changed quickly and her compassion for others really showed.
I really liked the dynamic between the FMC and her wards. They had such a strong bond because they were all misfits in society that had to stick together to survive. The MMC and his group of 6 were interesting but we didn't really get to know them as well as the FMC's family.
⤷ World-building:
It had a pretty typical urban fantasy setting, with the magical characters living in one area, humans living in another and a middle zone for people that didn't quite fit in either. The magical creatures were a mix of demigods, shifters, vampires and other random fantasy species. I did really enjoy the diversity of species and how each of them were powerful in different scenarios.
⤷ Writing:
The writing style bothered me a lot at times but I could look past that once I got invested in the plot. It came across as being a bit too quirky, with the FMC 'talking to herself' out loud - which no one ACTUALLY does irl - and the overkill 'funky swears' that were so cringe to read. At least it wasn't overly complex, so it was easily bingeable in a day.
