The nostalgia goggles are on, I still love this book so much.
this is just amazing when i finished reading it i had happy tears in my eyes, this book represents love, loyalty and family <3
I can see I need to read different types of books. When I started reading this book I though the main person was a nut job. If I fought with the other person in my head I would put somewhere I couldn't hurt others or myself. As the story unfolded it took on a deeper and deeper plot. Two different women living in the same body in love or falling in love with two different men. Talk about love triangles. Wow how can you win with that combination? By the time I was 75% through the book I was hooked. All my free time went into finding out what would happen. I had read reviews that said this book was better then the twilight series. I have read the twilight series and it's a toss up. I liked both stories. I do think that the host is a more compacted story then the twilight series.
going on record to say that this is the best invasion of the body snatchers inspired sci-fi love triangle romance ever written. and the romance isn't even that good. not sure how much of my fondness for this book is nostalgia, but even on my sixth-ish (?) reread of this book I'm impressed with the world building and depth of this post-alien-takeover world.yes it still has some of the annoying trappings of a Stephanie Meyer book, like unnecessary age gaps and a female main character addicted to martyrdom, but I still eat this up every time
After reading the Twilight Series I figured anything Stephenie wrote would be gold and I was right! This book is an amazing tale that embodies science fiction, romance, action and a thought provoking novel all at once. You'll spend hours reading it just to see what happens next. Another brilliant masterpiece by the literary genius that is Stephenie Meyer.
It took me ages to choose between four and three stars (how I wish I could do half stars). This book was an enjoyable read in a lot of ways. It was an interesting concept, a dramatic love triangle, a group of nicely developed characters and had Meyer's usual gripping writing that pulls one into the story. My negatives were that it took me a while to get into this, initially I wasn't sure if I would even bother reading it through. Also the love story was a little overdone and very reminiscent of a certain vampire/werewolf situation. Lastly the ending was not what I would have preferred. Overall it was a fun read with some interesting thoughts of what it is to be human and around what makes us who we are (body/mind/soul dilemma) but some bits were a little too forced or unbelievable.
It was a good book, but a little repetitive and confusing at times.
****SPOILERS****
The part that was the most confusing, to me, was the part when they "kidnap" the Healers, around there and a little after.

Let's get it out of the way: this book is much better than Twilight.
A compelling story of alien invasion is subverted, introducing the reader to the alien's perspective. Difficult questions about the nature of humanity and the strength of love are thoughtfully explored through the symbiotic relationship between parasite and host.
Melanie and Wanderer's relationship is by far the most interesting aspect of the book. What drags this story down is its overcommitment to an awkward and half-hearted love triangle. Where Wanderer's relationships with Jamie, Jeb, and Jared (Stephanie Meyer clearly likes names that begin with J) are gripping and nuanced, her stilted encounters with Ian are much less compelling.
It would also be nice if Stephanie Meyer could write some love interests who don't have a troubling age gap. There really is no need for Melanie to be 17 years old when she meets Jared. Would it really kill YA authors to write a female character older than 19? Clearly not, since the POV character of this novel is over a thousand years old.
The book also handles the subject of gender - and how an alien species would understand it - somewhat clumsily.
Besides these admittedly frustrating aspects, this is a very well written, slow burn book that would make a fantastic introduction to Sci-Fi for people who aren't crazy about that genre. Forget Twilight, pick up The Host.

saying this is so much better than twilight still isn't saying much. but it has way better characters and plot. a book about aliens and it feels believable.
