Like all of her books, this one is exquisite. Though it dragged a bit at times, and Jess, being an investigative journalist, had many of her questions conveniently answered by the book she finds, the writing remains top-notch. Despite the slow pace, it’s a well-crafted read.

I really enjoyed this book!! It was an interesting format - a “true crime” book within a book - which I could not put down. There were a few plot holes and inconsistencies (DNA tests in the 70s, Caller ID in the 80s) but they didn’t bother me as much as usual. However, I did think one of the “revelations” was quite obvious (which could have been avoided with the removal of a few unnecessary clues) hence the removal of a star. I related SO much to Polly - “We all know someone like that. They’re less careful, less capable, and yet somehow the truly terrible things never happen to them. People want to help; they attract kindness - they’re looked after by guardian angels wherever they go.” - which is prob why the book resonated so much with me. Overall, a great read - I look forward to reading more books by Kate Morton!

This is the kind of mystery book where you have hundreds of pages to go but the big twist is so obvious and you feel like you could just stop there. I regret finishing the book.

I had some difficulty getting through this book. I felt like it dragged on and was very slow moving. Maybe the characters didn't quite capture my attention. I was close to putting the book down halfway but I struggled through it. I would say that the story picked up about 3/4 of the way through with all the twists the story did take.
