Sometimes a book captivates from the very first page and Homecoming by Kate Morton is that book. It was worth reading over five hundred pages of beautiful prose and detailed storytelling. This is a novel about women, three generations of women. The novel takes place mostly in South Australia. Because there are so many surprising outcomes throughout it is difficult to summarize Homecoming. There are two storylines: 1959 in a small Australian town and 2018 in Sydney. A tragedy has occurred on the estate owned by the Turner family and this event will affect the small town for decades. An American author writes a book about the unfortunate events. Fast forward to recent times when Jess, a journalist, returns to Australia from England because her grandmother Nora Turner, who raised her, has been injured and is hospitalized. She is soon joined by her mother Polly with whom she has a tenuous relationship. During this time Jess comes upon the book that was written about the 1959 tragedy and begins researching, not realizing the effects this will have on her family. This is a book within a book and a mystery within a mystery. Highly recommended.
Nothing pleases me more than the announcement of a new Kate Morton book. I savour her precise prose, deft plotting and enchanting evocation of time and place. Her books always draw the reader in to a long held mystery and we have the thrill of discovery as we follow the protagonist along on their journey to piece all the clues together. I felt I had it figured out part way through, but I was wrong, and happy to be so. This is for lovers of family secrets, historical fiction and twisty plots.
Wonderful characters as always from Kate Morton. The twists and turns are many. Unexpected and both crushing yet heartwarming in that some lost souls find home in the end m
If you’ve read Kate Morton’s books, I think you’ll always remember which one you read first. For me, it was The Forgotten Garden, and that will always be my favorite. It reminded me of one of my favorite children’s books, The Secret Garden, and overall, I thought it was perfect. Homecoming is her newest, and it now ranks pretty high on my Morton list.
One of my favorite things about Kate Morton’s novels is all the complexity and layering. Homecoming has two timelines and a book within a book. I also love the atmosphere she creates in her writing, and here, there’s an old house, a compelling mystery involving the murders of part of a family, the vivid Australia backdrop and then, my favorite of all, the family saga with richly drawn characters.
It took me a while to finally pick up Homecoming. I know a Morton book requires my full concentration and devotion. The writing is detailed; the pacing slower and more-developed. There’s so much beautiful writing here. I highlighted passage after passage. I feel like Morton invited me into this story so fully that I was a contemporary of these characters. Overall, Homecoming is as dynamic and brilliant as we expect from this author and maybe I’m wrong about which book is now my favorite. ♥️
I received a gifted copy.
