If you’ve read Kate Morton’s books, I think you’ll always remember which one you read first. For me, it was The Forgotten Garden, and that will always be my favorite. It reminded me of one of my favorite children’s books, The Secret Garden, and overall, I thought it was perfect. Homecoming is her newest, and it now ranks pretty high on my Morton list.

One of my favorite things about Kate Morton’s novels is all the complexity and layering. Homecoming has two timelines and a book within a book. I also love the atmosphere she creates in her writing, and here, there’s an old house, a compelling mystery involving the murders of part of a family, the vivid Australia backdrop and then, my favorite of all, the family saga with richly drawn characters.

It took me a while to finally pick up Homecoming. I know a Morton book requires my full concentration and devotion. The writing is detailed; the pacing slower and more-developed. There’s so much beautiful writing here. I highlighted passage after passage. I feel like Morton invited me into this story so fully that I was a contemporary of these characters. Overall, Homecoming is as dynamic and brilliant as we expect from this author and maybe I’m wrong about which book is now my favorite. ♥️

I received a gifted copy.

Absolutely entranced by this book. What a beautiful read and just love the authors writing style.

3.5 rounded down.
I enjoyed this book but felt it was drawn out. Kate Morton had a beautiful way of storytelling. It's pure beauty.

Groan. Way too long of a book to be left with a rushed ending

Another great novel by Kate Morton. This was a good example of what it means to trust an author. For the first third of the book I couldn’t quite piece together the stories being told, I couldn’t see where they would eventually connect. But I trusted Kate Morton to bring it all together and she did. I also enjoyed the story within a story element as we see excerpts from the journalist who wrote about the family tragedy. This is a novel I’d recommend with a trigger warning for child death.

Great story. Cool setting.
He did it. She did it. He did it. Accident. Great story.

Loved the beautiful construction of the story, but this book could be 100 pages shorter and still be great.

Immersive twisty mystery set in Australia.

It was good but felt needlessly long.
emotional mysterious tense medium-paced
