3.94 AVERAGE

I almost DNF this book and was going to rate a 2-3 for about the first 300-350 pages when it finally kicked into gear — so final rating is 3-3.5 with a good few twists at the end. Also. How did I find ANOTHER book about relationships with daughters and mothers, lol

The “book in a book” thing sometimes tends to get a bit self indulgent with the overly descriptive and circular narratives (I may have some PTSD from trying and failing to read The Witching Hour), which is the majority of the first half of the book.

Edit:
I co-sign Jennifers review.

Interesting concepts. Emotional.

Very, very slow start but it eventually gets going enough to maintain interest

I wanted to love this book, I really did.

The novel's premise is undeniably intriguing—a decades-old murder mystery connected to the protagonist's family. As Jess, a journalist, returns to her native Australia after living in London for years, she stumbles upon a true crime book detailing the Turner Family Tragedy of 1959. This discovery sets in motion a journey to uncover long-buried secrets and unresolved mysteries.

I found the dual storyline added depth but unfortunately the weight of the narrative was too much, I had to be very patient reading this book – there was too much descriptive writing.

The "book within a book" concept, chronicling the 1959 events, provides historical context, but it was laborious to read, making it a challenge to maintain my engagement. Despite this, the final
revelation was 100 percent Morton’s signature style.

At over 500 pages, this book definitely needed tighter editing. A lot of passages were drawn out, and there are loose threads that could have been tied up. The balance between providing a treat for dedicated readers and avoiding a daunting page count is a fine line, and at times, this novel leaned towards the latter.

For me the first 400 pages were 2.5 star and the last 100+ pages were 4 star.
