2.5 stars. Very long. I didn't enjoy.

Loved this! I’ve loved everything I’ve read from Kate Morton and this is no exception. A family saga set across two continents, three generations and several decades, this book has such a great sense of time and place, the mystery aspect kept me guessing all the way to the end.

Slow start, but soon I couldn't put it down!

Muy buen libro, creo que de los libros que he leído de Kate Morton es de los más oscuros... Le puse 4 estrellas porque en algunos momentos se me hizo lenta la historia pero lo demás fue perfecto. Las últimas 200 páginas, chef Kisses

It's just not justifiable to make a book 550 pages if the book is way too cluttered and boring. I would have given up on reading this early on if it wasn't for a book club. I did check reviews midway through the book just to see if it got better and saw so many people swearing the last 100 pages were great but I still hated it. Also, if the first FOUR HUNDRED AND FIFTY pages of a book are bad, that's not a good sign! Cut your book down if it's this long and takes that long to get good.

I’ve loved Kate Morton’s books over the years but this one was a bit of a letdown. It took several tries to get into it. I figured out the primary twist early on, then the author made it blatantly obvious around 60% complete, only to drag the reveal out forever. Nothing that came after really redeemed it.

This is the second Kate Morton I’ve read and her books so far are really turning out to be my version of a cozy read. A bit more complex than your average mass commercial fiction, but still a relatively quick read for 500+ pages (it took me a week of reading every chance I got). There are so many elements she’s drawn to as an author that I’m also drawn to as a reader - old houses, literature, mothers and daughters, secret rooms!! There was even a scene that felt like an homage to the opening chapter of Rebecca.

I had theories about halfway through that turned out to be correct, though I was second guessing myself a lot, and I enjoyed every turn. There were a couple (minor) characters that I felt needed a bit more of a wrap up. I also wish it went into more detail about Nora’s work restoring old houses, as that’s a particular interest of mine. But overall, I loved reading this book!
