Natural Resources officer Sloan Cooper is shot several times when she walks into a robbery in progress at a mini-mart. She dies on the OR table & is shocked back to life. While recovering, she hears about a woman vanishing w/o a trace & begins searching for similar cases. She finds several across three states & once she figures out the common thread: being brought back to life; it becomes a race against time to stop the perpetrators (Clara & Sam) before she becomes the next victim.
Nora Roberts does an excellent job of creating tension and suspense to keep the reader engaged. Goodreads & StoryGraph both have this book listed as Romance/Mystery/Thriller (in that order). Although there is a love interest between Sloan and Nash Littlefield, as well as their younger siblings, Drea Cooper and Theo Littlefield, it wasn't the focus of the story - just a nice aside. Mystery suggests to me a major unknown, but that really isn't the case here as the reader is pretty much kept in the loop about all things happening. Thriller is more suited to this story as it climaxes toward the protagonist (Sloan) and the antagonists (Clara and Sam) coming face to face.

I feel like the book was unnecessarily long. The editor could have cut out some things and we would have had the same story.

I haven't read a Nora Roberts book in a while and that's a mistake on my part for sure. I was drawn into the story immediately, and could not put it down. So many great characters and wonderful development of them, alongside a twisted crime and some danger. Throw in not one, but two, blossoming romances and what more could you ask for?
