The first novel I read in French, once again continuing my pattern of the first novel I read in another language having to do with the death of a woman and the artistic creation it inspires.

Quote
“Nuns pass, scarcely disturbing the silence, as the swans scarcely disturb the water”

This book taught me that I do not like symbolism books.

This was probably the most difficult review up until now. This book is dull, very little dialogue, which I actually don’t mind) there is religion in an 1892 way, which then was so very conservative and very excessively so, the book is morbid, with death, obsession, and depression, so not much fun really.
According to wikipedia this book is perhaps the symbolism novel, well, after reading the definition of symbolism from wikipedia, which was a late nineteenth-century art movement of French, Russian and Belgian origin in poetry and other arts seeking to represent absolute truths symbolically through metaphorical images and language mainly as a reaction against naturalism and realism.
Anyone wanting to explain what symbolism is, because I don't understand it properly. Please add a comment in the description below.

A man is obsessed with his dead wife, 5 years after her death he sees another woman on the empty streets of Bruges and starts to follow her, and actually, harass her….. This woman looks alot like his deceased wife. What are the odds of meeting another woman who looks like your deceased wife on empty streets?

This is not an enjoyable book, the genres, death, obsession, religion… religion, actually it is not a religious books, it just covers the traumas religious people had at the time with what is acceptable and not.
They are not my favourite genres. But then again… I did not forget that the book was written in 1892, which was such a different era.

The writing itself was good, details of Bruges and the one thing that I thought was the best, and i t is believed to be the first work of fiction illustrated with photographs. Wonderful photographs of Burge. Again another link n the description below.

The best part is the setting, beautiful Bruges which at that time was a decrepit town in Belgium.

I am giving this book 2 stars rather than one because I did finish it. But it is actually not hard to finish at only 100 pages.
The next country in the read the world challenge is the Dominican Republic

Between a 3-4 stars at times. This is another book that’s fun to analyze and to see as a historical marker in a specific genre. That being said, the characters were definitely not the smartest at times, but I did enjoy it.
