I can see how this can be a charming and beautifully written story, but I wasn't super invested in the characters. I love the idea of the doors leading to worlds, but the plot really dragged for me and I struggled to push through. There were some moments where I was like "yea that's really well written... pretty even..." but a lot of the time I was just checking the progress and looking forward to it being over, which is sad because I really enjoyed Starling House, unfortunately this one does not live up to that.

A portal fantasy, a meditation on the roles of portals in mythology and strorytelling, a portal fantasy through a colonial lense and, perhaps most important of all, a rollicking good yarn. Cannot recommend enough.

This is one of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read. It is among my very favorites! A balanced blend of our world and other worlds, and the magic that flows in and out of and through them.

A gorgeous book. An absolute must read. If you don’t do anything else, at the very least you should read this book!
