A nice short read or listen for passing time. A little predictable but did not take away from the entertainment and did make me interested in reading her series based on the detective.

Book 23 was "The Roommate" by Dervla McTiernan. I got this novella as a freebie from Audible Audio. It's a prequel to The Cormac Reilly series and supposedly takes place sometime in the 1990s. I haven't read any of the full length novels in this series.

The story was alright but it was basically your typical predictable "bad roommate" story along the lines of "Single White Female." There are also some technology anachronisms in the story that will probably be annoying and distracting for long time techies.

Even for a novella, this mystery-thriller feels rushed and unformed. Worse, its climax doesn't make sense. I am not inspired to read the further adventures of Cormac Reilly.

This was an interesting quick read. Reminded me of that movie Single White Female. A good quick thriller.

I’m quickly becoming a fan of Dervla McTiernan. The Roommate is the second novella I’ve read that is a prequel to her Cormac Reilly series. I’ve also read the first book in the series, The Ruin. Her books are mysterious and suspenseful.

Set in Ireland, Niamh is a young woman employed as a teacher living with a roommate. She wakes up early one morning, assuming her roommate is still asleep, when the police, Cormac Reilly, knocks on her door. Curious as to why her roommate didn’t rouse with the knocking, Niamh realizes her roommate is missing. As the investigation into her missing roommate evolves, Niamh’s life becomes increasingly chaotic and confusing.

This short, thrilling mystery kept me engaged. Told from the perspective of Niamh, Cormac Reilly kept appearing in the story as the lead investigator. I never knew when he was going to pop up. I liked all the characters and how the story evolved. Just when I wasn’t sure where the story was going to lead me, it quickly took me in an unexpected direction. It was frightening and intriguing.

I picked up the audiobook format of The Roommate with my Audible subscription. Aoife McMahon is an excellent narrator.

I have photos and additional information that I'm unable to include here. It can all be found on my blog, in the link below.
A Book And A Dog

As always, Ms. McTiernan delivers another winner! I just soak up every word of her stories and this novella was no exception. In such a short story, she delivers a thoroughly intense and creepy story of stalking and murderers hiding where we'd least expect them.

Quick listen and decent story.

dark mysterious tense medium-paced

Our main character, Niamh, learns devastating news about her roommate and then the situation goes downhill from there. This story is well-developed, for a novella, in both plot and character. I especially enjoyed one of the best "Oh, sh*t!" moments I've ever read in a thriller. I had to hit pause on the audiobook and then take a few minutes to gather courage to keep listening!
