For the first 2/3 this book was a solid 3 star, but the last third really ramped it up for me into 4 stars!

I thought this was an incredible. A rare book that I could read a paragraph and be interrupted by my family and then want to continue reading. The two main characters were so well written. And for a moment some of their flaws drove me a little crazy… but it continued to be woven together so nicely. I also did the 50/50 audiobook and hard back and enjoyed them both. Well done Jean Kwok! I also got to hear her speak at Opus and Olives… she has such an astonishing back story.

I liked the premise of this book…but every character drove me nuts. There were also too many convenient plot twists. Thankful it wasn’t terribly long because I was ready for it to be done.

For whatever reason, I couldn't really engage with this book. While I think the themes and story are timely and important, the characters felt underdeveloped and I found myself liking Rebecca, the white woman's, story more which perhaps wasn't how I was supposed to feel. I also found the twist involving the nanny to be a bit too easy to figure out. Overall, this was a disappointment that fell flat for me.

I absolutely loved this story, the characters, character development and themes of family, betrayal, sacrifice, and race. I knew that the two story lines were getting close to crossing over however didn't expect Jasmine to be Fiona's nanny! I was astonished and wished the explanation went further. Instead, when this twist happened, the reader just gets a paragraph or two of how these years in secret happened and it moves on.

Would recommend to anyone!
