Slow and I didn't think about it at all when I wasn't reading.

I didn't think the translation read well either.

perfectly lovely, perfectly charming book. light on plot and heavy on casting a diverse (personality-wise, not identity-wise) set of interesting characters, each of whom clearly possesses a rich internal life. i felt the protagonist was a lot like me, really, except more apologetic—and, of course, more averse to books to begin with. i've seen most people focus on the theme of reading, and it is important to be sure; but i see this book as more of an ode to the neighbourhood of jimbocho as a whole, of which its thriving literary scene forms a foundational (but not necessarily central) backdrop. a nice, easy-breezy read to get me back on track after such a long time.
