Demian: The Story of Emil Sinclair’s Youth by Herman Hesse
★★★★★
Translated from the German by Michael Roloff and Michael Lebeck
Read during clerkship: Surgery Rotation in Ospital ng Makati
Loved the book actually. This coming of age book really dissects the young existentialist dread.
I especially was drawn into the sign of the mark, which was an allusion to Cain and Abel. By being different, you see things in a different perspective where you find meaning, and morality within yourself
A novel about growth and coming to know the self and subconscious. Hesse and his works seem to have great appeal for the disaffected and searching of his time and ours.
Man relinquishes all but is spoken to by God in a final encounter beyond himself.

i'm honestly just not smart enough for this kind of stuff
A book of mystery, exploration and self-realisation.
I was lucky enough to read it as a tween, and have taken the time to re-read it at least once a year ever since. Each time I learn something new about the characters, but also about myself. Demian’s ramblings are no doubt easier to understand now, at 20, than they were at 12, and the abstract (and often a tad too pretentious) discussions of religion and spirituality are much more palatable, yet no matter how many times I read them, I never grow tired of them.
