I picked this book up shortly after reading Steppenwolf about two years ago. I read about half of Demian the first time but put it down for a while as I was coping with starting university. I later started reading Demian from the beginning again and I am quite glad that I did. I felt that I could connect to Emil's journey and that there was something special about it. Hesse has written a solid novel that I plan on re-reading in the future.

Demian details a journey of transformation- inevitable yet feared all the same- “to unite the divine and ‘satanic’”, quoting the book itself.
I wouldn’t count this as a critique of God but rather critique of religious organisations - the culture of purity and shaming is something that is spearheaded by men, not God. And most of the times, the shaming, the pearl-clutching, is what leads one onto the most disastrous of paths.
