A very intriguing start to what I hope to be an action and (hopefully) romance packed series! I really liked the concept of this book! I don't want to say too much else because I don't want to give anything away ;)

This one was pretty difficult to rate because of how short it was but after putting it into the cawpile sheet it landed on a 4 star rating! The other volumes are coming out soon but I think it might be best to wait for them to all come out and then read it all together? Maybe they'll make a bind up?

not gonna lie, I mainly picked this up because it's short and because I needed my vampire novel fix. I'm having Blood Casino withdrawals and I hoped this would help.
And guess what?? It really did.
A Whisper in the Dark reads like every single book I used to read back in 2008, full of action and notions, all concentrated in 100 pages and with a main character I surprisingly didn't want to throw off a bridge.

This has loads of promise, but whilst I've really enjoyed dipping my toes into this book, as a whole volume in a serial publication, I haven't got a lot to work with in terms of the plot, characters etc. because it's just starting. I love Sutton's other work, so don't let a lower average rating put you off, because it's really cool so far!

So... I got kindle unlimited last week because it was 99 cents for two months. And I’m in the middle of another book right now but this one was only 95 pages. I read it and now I’m obsessed and need to read all of them.

This book basically vampires, urban fantasy, post apocalyptic goodness. If you liked Crescent City or From Blood and Ash, you’ll like this. There’s four of them that add up to a bigger story.

Anyway, I loved this. I think this weird little sub-genre of urban fantasy romance books is my favourite sub-genre.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 only because it didn’t feel like a full story, and I know it’s not supposed to but still. I’m already reading the next one of course.

Reader be warned...

***This serial ends on a cliffhanger after the 4th installment and the next release date is the summer of 2021.***

Review of serial parts 1-4:

The world created by these two authors is fantastic. It’s a very unique take on a dystopian society with vampires as the ruling class, and everyone else huddling at the bottom of a muddled social structure. Although other supernatural characters are mentioned, we don’t get a clear picture of hierarchy. There are some holes in the world building, but even with the questions that brings, the story arc is solid. The conflict and denouement are a bit simplistic, and the pacing was a bit rushed. Also, I’m not wholly surprised by the ‘twist’ at the end, but I’m hooked. I’m invested in the characters and their story.

The MC is strong, even through her many trials and hardships. She is smart, tough, and vicious when necessary, but remains unique within the vampire world because of her relations with the humans around her. She grows into herself throughout the series, and I found her both relatable and likable.

Without giving too much detail, the chemistry between the MC and male interest is alternatively sweet, and heated... I guess you can say, it depends. *smirk*

I’m frustrated with the long a$$ wait before the next release, and the freaking book hangover I’m left with, but I’m definitely looking forward to continuing the story. Next year. *sigh*
