A surprisingly solid read!

Maybe it's that it's been so long since I last read a vampire book, or this was just such a contrast to what I've been reading recently, but I liked it a lot! I am intrigued by the world and I like the characters. Will definitely continue with this series!

Growing up and being raised in the world of luxury and comfort, Charlotte Travesty doesn’t know the world that awaits her after her Awakening. Everything changes when she blinks open her eyes and faces her new life. A life that doesn’t include a warm bed and no worries.

The world this book takes place in is vivid in it’s descriptions without feeling like there’s too much information just dumped on you. The characters feel real and three dimensional, which is always something I look for in a new series I might want to follow, and I found myself feeling for Charlotte as her world tilted sideways and everything she new disappeared from her life.

The new take on vampires is interesting, especially the cast system that’s introduced and the world the vampires have created in respect to both themselves, the humans and other creatures, and the halflings feels well thought out and planned. And the plot of this story has me waiting for the next installment already.

Keep in mind, this is the first installment of four for a serial which means it does end on a cliff hanger, but because going into it I knew it was a serial this doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

Disclaimer: I did receive an arc of the book in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion. All thoughts are my own and were not colored by receiving the arc.

For me, I liked the idea of this book, but it didn't meet the expectations I had. The book ended way too quickly, and it felt as if the book wasn't finished. I needed way more world building and background of the characters. And again, it didn't feel like I read a completed book.

Thanks for reading,
Caden

This books was part of my Bookoplathon tbr to complete the “lowest rated” prompt.

Okay, so… I thought this was a proper-length novel not under 100 pages? Only five chapters? IMAGINE MY SURPRISE. This read like a Wattpad level fanfic (emphasis on Wattpad level) but it was so quick that - spoiler alert - I read all four existing instalments anyway. Not gonna lie, the story had potential to become so much more awesome but it was poorly set up. Too much telling and too little showing, I couldn’t care less for most of the characters as there was no time to even make up my mind about them and there were lots of info dumping. Also, the only characters of colour were human slaves which bugged me a lot. Read through for the same reason why i used to watch Riverdale - it was quick and not requiring brain power, good way to let yourself chill for an hour while drinking coffee.

Oh, the dreaded serial. Sigh. I already know I don't like serials and somehow I ended up reading this first part and the second part.

It was fine. There's nothing really wrong with the writing or the story. It's more plot-driven, however, so I don't feel connected to the characters at all. The plot was intriguing enough for me to read two parts, but unfortunately, not enough for me to continue on with the last two. I do like Drew and sort of like Charlie herself, but both of them were kind of flat since there wasn't much time spent on them or their relationship. I honestly can't remember what happened in this first part to differentiate it from the second. I think this could have been good as one book (my constant complaint about serials) with more emphasis on characters; however, the world seems interesting and it's a different take on the usual vampire story.

I know lots of other people like it though so take what I say with a grain of salt.

The start of this series didn't convince me yet, but I might try the second one to see where the story goes. There are some characters that might be really interesting and with a bit more world building this could develop in a great direction.

Who is going to be Charlie's love interest? Drew or Noah? I don't think Noah will harm Charlie. I feel like Noah will be my favorite character. I love when a character appears to be dangerous and mysterious at the same time. They appear to be bad-type on the outside, but inside they are good people. I am thinking that is who Noah is going to be. I really enjoyed this short novella and if I didn't participate in the Reading Rush, then I would be reading all of the other three novellas in this series.

CAWPILE Rating:
Character (8)- I think I am probably on side Noah rather than side Drew. Drew seems to be the kind type and would risk his life for Charlie, but he isn't the type I like. I personally like the bad boy trope more. I didn't think that I hated any of the characters yet. I like the main character, Charlie, which is better than calling her Charlotte because it's hard to pronounce for me. I am interested in the character Aya or Ava? I forgot her name...

Atmosphere (8)- This book has a great world building. I don't really have thything else to say...

Writing (8)- I couldn't tell that two people wrote this book. It feel like one person did. I really loved the writing style because it was really easy to go into the writing and never come out of the book.

Plot (7)- Didn't really have a big plot because it is really short. I liked the ending of the book really well.

Intrigue (8)- I need to read the next one in the series.

Logic (8)- There was nothing that made me confused.

Enjoyment (8.5)- I am really liking this book series. I want to know more about this world and the characters.
