So.  Cute.  The pictures, the plot, the character development.  I absolutely love how Jeffers always makes me feel like a kid again, easily entranced by what's happening, and hoping that everything will be okay even though I know that it most certainly will be.

Reading as an adult, it pained me when the two separate, though it truly is understandable--sometimes you just gotta do you, and only you.  And, as an adult, the ending was so sweet, knowing that friendships can last hardships and time and distance.  It gave me a bit of hope.

I adore Jeffers' art! This is a great story of friendship. The plot is simple (penguin wants to fly, gets hired as a human cannonball, boy comes to the rescue) but the language, although straightforward, isn't watered down. "Later that night, when the penguin should have been excited, he couldn't help but miss his friend. Likewise, the boy could barely sleep for worrying about his friend." Read this aloud for the lovely use of language, and then let the kids have fun acting out the story with puppets or cut-outs of the penguin and the boy.

This is an adorable tale of two best friends--a penguin and a boy--who do everything together. Penguin has always wanted to fly, and the boy tries to make his wish happen. I had a lot of fun reading this to my son and found it to be very entertaining.

Penguin wants to fly. Despite the help of his friend, he has no luck flying. When the two go to the zoo to seek advice, the penguin spies a sign advertising a circus position as a flying cannonball. He takes off to seize his chance to fly and leaves the boy behind. The two miss one another terribly. The boy spots a picture of the penguin on a poster. He races to the show just in time to catch the terrified penguin. The two decide penguins' wings don't work because they don't like to fly after all.
Jeffers' book features simple prose and minimal text on each page. The unique illustrations will remind young readers of a water color. They will enjoy this tale of friendship and the suspense created when the boy and the penguin get separated. Children can practice their print awareness skills using the simple text on each page. Additionally, they can practice narrative skills as they retell the penguin's experience and rescue.
