Lovely retelling of pride & prejudice. Great representation of a variety Muslim people, no cookie cutters. Enjoyable!

Okay I have very mixed feelings about this.
I did feel there was good representation at first of different versions of Muslim families. It wa an interesting to hear about the rishta process and what this looks like from all angles.

I liked the growing bond between Khalid and Ayesha. However the micro aggressions around his outfits is insane - even from Ayesha. Yes, you can have this from  the Muslim community but idk. Almost feels the book is pushing for an interpretation of Muslims that is western digestible.

I get his proposal was meant to channel Darcy’s / and the patella with writing the letter. But wow, his pure insults in the proposal was maddening.

Clara’s character felt super important at the start to pointless at the end. Khalids sister and everything around her felt so randomly placed at times. WTH is up with Tarik, who waits 10 years to exact revenge on teenage love and tried to ruin another girls reputation in the process?. Hafsas pictures being taken but then this being a two sentence thing and not acknowledged is crazy. Hafsas character in general as well as Khalids mum and Tarik all felt like caricatures of people. Too extreme to feel real.

I mean I am happy about the ending but the wrap up on characters feels rushed at the end.

Few like there definitely was so much potential.

expected a full romance, but got a delightful mix of mystery, romance, revenge. Needed a better editor for the wrap up on characters, there were sections that were very well written. Lots of plot potential. Good airport read

I read this book as part of the Once Upon A Book Club subscription. I thought it was well written. I enjoyed learning about the Muslim tradition of arranged marriages. It was exciting to explore the growth in each of the main characters. I laughed and cried during this story! It would be interesting to see this as a movie. There are so many beautiful things mentioned in the book, that should be brought to life on screen!

Ayesha At Last makes me smile just thinking about it. This is a romance with both heart and soul. I loved learning more about desi and Muslim culture, especially in the Toronto immigrant enclave this book is set within. Both romantic leads are strong, complex characters that I really enjoyed getting to know. There is also a cast of sweet, funny supporting characters that give this book a definite “comedy of errors” feel. I adore the original P&P so I almost always enjoy a spin-off, and this one was both original and super sweet. This is Jalaluddin’s first novel, which shows in some borderline-clumsy prose (and in Ayesha’s less-than-stellar poetic efforts) but that is overshadowed by the huge heart at the center of this story! I really enjoyed the ride.

I have very mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand, while I felt like it was a bit rushed, the last third of the book was incredibly entertaining and I flew through it in less than an hour. On the other hand... this story took me an embarrassingly long time to get into and the only reason I didn't dnf it was because I had a physical copy of it.

Finally!! I think I prefer the author’s other book but this one is still good, thought the first half makes it hard to pick up
