I *love* this cover (that shade of purple is perfection!) and I really liked the book itself. The plot is set up as an homage to Pride and Prejudice, in modern-day Toronto, plus Shakespearean quotes/references sprinkled throughout. I felt that the ending was a bit rushed, but the middle was so strong I didn't want to put it down. I'll look for future novels by this author.
This twist on Pride and Prejudice and Shakespearean comedies was powerful. I loved the shattering of expectations and stereotypes all over this work, and the opportunity that the reader has to do the same. Its funny, heartfelt, and lovely.

Pembaca Pride & Prejudice pasti tahu kalau cerita itu ada penjahatnya. Nah, di novel ini ada beberapa peran antagonis dan satu penjahat murni yang betul2 ngeselin. Untungnya semua berakhir dengan baik dan memuaskan.
Setelah selesai baca, plusnya novel ini:
- latarnya unik dibandingkan buku romance lain (desi+muslim+perjodohan ala mereka)
- dari segi plot lumayan seru, adaptasi p&p tapi nggak plek jadi masih harus nebak2
- ada kakek penggemar Shakespeare
- side couples

Favorite reads of the year so far! Loved how the main characters were not ashamed of being a Muslim and take pride in their religious practices. Just the representation that I needed with the right amount of twists and turns. I LOVED IT and probably will be reading it again soon! I’m recommend this book 100%
I enjoyed the beginning more than the end, and I liked the stories about the Muslim community in Toronto, and each of the main character's relationships with their family and friends and employers, more than I cared about the romance itself. I thought the evil boss was over the top -- how could such an awful woman rise to such a position of power -- but I loved how Sheila was able to turn the tables with Khalid. I also appreciated that Amir, who seemed to be nothing but comic relief, turned out to have depths of his own.
I think this story has much more in common with Shakespeare's comedies than with Pride & Prejudice, and the one piece of writing the deliberately echoed Austen (the proposal) seemed inconsistent with Khalid's mindset up until then. I can't help wondering whether Jalaluddin's editors suggested adding those elements late in the writing process, because the Shakespearean parallels work so much better. Sheila and Amir and Hafsa would be right at home in Arden.

Everyone once in a while Overdrive sends me a notice saying “the book you had on hold has been added to your library” and I look at the title and wonder. But the minute I heard “Because while it is a truth universally acknowledged that a single Muslim man must be in want of a wife, there’s an even greater truth: To his Indian mother, his own inclinations are of secondary importance.” I figured out why I had put it on hold.

A conservative Muslim man and a less-conservative Muslim woman who can't seem to get along until, of course, they fall in love. I loved the space the author gave both characters to practice their faith in different ways, but also learn and grow from each other. There were a lot of subplots in the second half of the book that made it feel a bit mellow dramatic, but otherwise a very enjoyable, sweet story. Listening on audio was the right call, as I'm sure I would have mispronounced several names and some dialogue.
A modern romance that takes place in Toronto, has positive Muslim and South Asian representation AND parallels with Pride and Prejudice? Yes please
