Huge TW for child death. That is a hard limit for me and this wasn’t an enjoyable read.

What a read! This book kept me guessing. I loved the twists and turns. The characters were frustrating and some of them I liked, some of them I hated, and some of them I felt so many things for. Spectacular!

If you've read ‘We Need Talk About Kevin,’ you’ve read this. Its pretty much that except a little bit less extreme and with quell done flashbacks to Blythe’s childhood, her mother’s life and her grandmother’s life. I think that this book would have been a lot more powerful if it left us guessing, if it didn't have that last sentence that seemingly confirm that Violet actually did kill her brother and that other boy. I feel like this would have been better as a book about generational trauma, maybe even with a chapter from Violet’s perspective and not a thriller. It made all of the good parts feel cheaper. I really liked the moments when Blythe can kind of see past what she assumes about Violet and sees that she might just be a girl who is struggling and not a sociopath. I think that if the mother was struggling and maybe not totally correct about Violet, at least the more serious things that she does it would be better. I mean Blythe has been traumatized and is under a lot of stress, and ends up doing crazy things like befriending her ex’s current partner in disguise. Also, Fox is terrible in such a predictable way and yet it still makes my skin crawl.

Very different to the fast paced thrillers I’ve been reading. Slow burn, thought provoking and made me feel very uneasy.
