I just couldn't seem to get into the book. I have no clue if it was because it was slow and felt like it was back and forth but I ended up giving up on it halfway through. I was trying so hard because the book seemed to have good reviews. I'm not sure if it's just not my style or what but I don't think I'll be reading any more of this book.

Enjoyable love story despite not a good fit for regency behaviors and the heroine not being reasonable in declining the hero's marriage proposals despite them being in love. But I still enjoyed a strong heroine willing to do unconventional, dangerous steps to keep herself free and protect her sister.

The hero was a sweet man who was very dutiful and orderly. Not a rake.

I recommend reading the Lonely Lord's books first, especially Douglas to get the background on this family and the many side characters.

I wasn't a big fan of how this employee/employer romance started as the first few encounters seem a bit coerced.  Romance grew on me and I liked the end, but preferre  her other books better.

This book started out really strong and interesting….and then went completely off the rails. It was very odd.

Also, please… no more lemonade or muffins…

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. I love historical romances and this was one that I think I'll pick up again and again. I loved the hero, unlike many romance historical heros he didn't have a large quantity of issues he had to work through, he actually seemed pretty pulled together. The heroine, even though she was hiding something, she was able to lean on the hero not to solve her problems but to help her become stronger. The only problem I did have with this story is that there seemed to be some pretty significant back story going on (with Gwen and Rose) that I didn't think was fully developed in this story. It makes me think that there may have been an earlier story or short story I may have missed by in my limited research I didn't see anything prior to The Heir. Other than that, loved this story. Made a great sitting-by-the-pool read and am excited about the next in the series, The Soldier.

I loved all the details about housekeeping. I hated the fact that the book revolved around an earl courting a housekeeper with the intention of marrying her, with the connivance of basically everyone involved. At one point he literally says "If you have a reason of any substance [for us not to be together] - a husband somewhere, a mortal fear of intercourse, something besides your silly conviction earls don't marry housekeepers - then I will consider desisting [from courting you]." That's... not how the nineteenth century worked. (Later in the book, people point out that Anna is in fact not the sort of person one would expect to marry a future duke - oh really? Who could ever have guessed???) By the end of the book we had been introduced to approximately three million eligible men, most of whom I'm guessing will get their own books. The sad thing is I will probably, eventually, read them.

Plot:

Gayle, the earl of Wyndham stays in the city over the summer. He is tired of his father trying to find a woman for him, any woman. But then he notices his pretty housekeeper, or more like she makes him see stars when she knocks him over the head. Anna Seaton is not all she says she is and her secret will lead everyone into danger.

My thoughts:

I was a bit worried when I started because I had read two reviews that wasn't thrilled over this book. But the more I read the more I liked it, and I put those doubts behind me.

Gayle, or Westhaven as they also call him is your typical lord. He has his mistress, he attends all the balls, but the difference is that he does not want some girl right out of the schoolroom that his father throws at him. He wants something more, but mostly he just seems angry at his father. Anna on the other hand is a total enigma, she works as a housekeeper, her deaf sister works there too. She speaks many languages, writes beautifully and speaks way too good not to be hiding something.

Yes there were times when I wanted to hit her over the head. She was just so stubborn, that stupid woman, but luckily Westhaven was a man who knew what he wanted and would not let go. He wanted to win her over and I did like that side of him, because he knew she loved him, but she was just too worried about others, which is a good thing, but she should have taken care of herself too.

The thing that kept me reading and reading was the mystery part. It was just killing me not knowing who she really was, what she had done and what she was running from. So that was the best part of this book.

The romance was also good, it seemed like they could not have each other, she wanted to keep running, he wanted the truth. And some good side characters, especially with his brother, I would want his story, and her sister's story too.

Final thoughts and recommendation:

She kept the plot going for a very long time, I am glad she did not spill the beans and told the reader why Anna was running, because it just made it impossible for me to put the book down. I am too curious for my own good. By saying that I will give the book a 3,5 because of the mystery part, a great way for me to drive myself crazy by reading and reading to find out the truth. And it was a good reason for running too, can't say more than that.

Reason for reading:

Sounded good

This dude's inability to accept the word no through the first 2/3s of the book really pissed me off.
