This book seems to follow the format of a typical childhood adventure. Something that many children, (from at least my experience) dream of happening to them. Searching for treasure, the realization that what you've gotten mixed up in is real. None of the children regret getting mixed up in it, but rather embrace it, despite the obvious danger. Death never seems to come into play.
The themes of good verses evil are very prevalent as well. There is no question who is good and who is not for almost all of the book. Even before the children know who they are up against, when meeting him randomly they could tell, (or at least the reader could tell) that something was up.
Still, a very fun book that was enjoyable to read as well as being a quick read. It brings a lot of childhood memories of playing "adventure" and stays true, mostly, to that childhood mentality.

I have to say that I was not to thrilled with the book. It felt much like a famous five book with slightly more thrill and a some King Arthur legend thrown in.
I am going to try the second book in the series hoping that it improves.
