I finally got rid of this series of books a few years ago at a garage sale after I had drug them from pillar to post and I still regret it. I could pick up any book in the series, much like the Narnia books, and be sucked right back in.

The characters were realistic in their nitpicking and arguments while engaging in a fun and fantastic quest. Treasure maps, evil geniuses, it really has it all.

Was expecting more fantasy elements but the first installment is really just a long game of cat and mouse. The first half was great because I was anticipating some sort of reveal or the shift from ordinary to extraordinary- but when I realized the rest of the book was gonna be more running away from the bad guys it started to drag. I'm excited to read the next of the series though!

A fast-paced, well-written book about children who begin an adventure that involves Arthurian legends in the Cornish countryside. If you enjoy The Narnian Chronicles, Pullman's series or even the Harry Potter series, I think you will like this first book in Cooper's Dark is Rising Sequence.

Lighter than the rest of the series, but a fast and enjoyable start nonetheless.

This book reads like an old book I read as a child. It has all the elements that made up a classic children's books: big houses to explore, rainy days, secrets in the attic, a mysterious but good-hearted old man, adventure, danger, outdated comments about the "natives," etc.

I suspect I might have enjoyed it more as a kid. As an adult I found it interesting but not terribly unique / memorable.

There's a lot to like about this book. I wouldn't say I LOVED it, but there are a lot of scenes that stick with me. It's fun watching these young siblings as they start down the beginnings of a big mysterious path.
