The Candymakers

So funny, so mysterious, so wonderful! I really loved this book, and so did my class. It deserves more attention! If at first you think it's just another Wonka makeover, keep reading. It's amazing!

Good solid story, nice for boys or girls. Alternating points of view will appeal to many.

This book has been on various and sundry displays at Barnes & Noble for the past couple years and it eventually wore me down. I don't know why I had a bias against it when I'd never read anything by Mass before. I like mysteries. I like candy. Finally, though, I needed a palate cleanser between books higher up on my to-read list and this seemed appropriate.

I feel like a jerk.

This book was excellent and easily better than the two books *ahem* "bookending" it. Logan is such a genuinely sweet (yes, this review could easily be pun filled, but I won't try to do them on purpose!) kid, and Miles, Daisy, and Philip are such an interesting dynamic that what easily could have been four stereotypes turned into four unique voices.

Taking each kids point of view for roughly the same two days was a fun, fill-in-the-gap exercise that had potential to cut the pacing, but managed to avoid dragging at all.

I don't care much for spoilers, so I'll just say that a few of the "surprises" were a bit unbelievable, but when I took a step back I realized I was only ruining my own fun, and taken at face value, added charm and just a bit more ridiculous fun to the whole mix.

The Candymakers is told from the perspective of four different individuals. All four are competing in a candy making contest. One is the candy maker's son, Logan. The other three are Miles, Daisy and Philip. Each has a different reason for joining the contest and they are connected in unexpected ways. I led a book club discussion with 8-10 6th graders about this book. We used the questions at the back of the book and I felt the kids had some great things to say.

My favorite thing about this book was that my non-reader son read the sequel to the book in record time. He prefers to read the same graphic novels over and over and over so to have him read a 500+ page book was amazing. We listened to the audio book of The Candymakers and he read the sequel on his own. Happy Day!!!!!

It started out a little slow, and I wasn't a huge fan of the writing style at first, but then it all started coming together to create an adorable, funny story with some interesting twists. I wish some of the candy in the book were real, too.

Logan, Miles, Daisy and Philip have been chosen as contestents for the national candymaking contest. In alternating points of view, we follow these four as they prepare their creations at the Life is Sweet Candy Factory. Logan is the Candymaker's son and is the favorite to win. How could he not be, growing up in the factory? Then there's Miles, the quiet boy who is always talking about the afterlife. Daisy is a pretty, spirited girl who is occasionally seen talking to herself and whose best friend is a horse named Magpie. And finally there's Phillip, the uptight, suit-wearing boy who can't say two words without insulting someone around him. As we learn more about each character both from their own words and through the eyes of the other kids, the reader discovers that each child has a secret. How will their secrets affect the contest...and each other?

A sweet (*grin*) story about friendship, working together and understanding differences.”

Boring!

My kids LOVED this book, but I wasn't quite as enamoured with it... Enjoyed Daisy's story and was hopeful that it would continue along those lines, but it really didn't.

easily one of the best children's books i read when i was younger. this is a book i will be buying for all of my friends kids. does an incredible job of teaching kids about advocating for themselves and supporting each other at the same time!
