Love this silly picture book about breaking the mold and being unique!

Cute use of word play that will entertain little ones. As the small brown bird decides he can try new sounds, the other birds decide to try it too. All except the crow who demands that this just isn't the way things are done. He flies off but the other birds keep after him to join in the fun. Same message as a wonderful old Harry Chapin song called "Flowers Are Red."

Funny book - need lots of practice to read out loud, lots of made up sounds.

Excellent and evocative illustrations and a great story@

On a silliness level with The Book with No Pictures, this was great fun to read with a large group of toddlers.

Won the CLEL Bell Award 2015 for Talk. I read it aloud to a couple of childcare groups. They really enjoyed it and began making sound effects of their own which I thought was pretty spectacular.

This book was recommended and supposed to be so amazing. The message was good, but it just struck me as odd. My kids went, "Huh?" and quickly moved on to a new book.

My son loves this. It's great for any child (or adult) who gets a kick out of silly, made-up words. A fun read-aloud for story time or one-on-one reading.

Portis gets five stars for making a book about bird calls that includes the phrases "we'll mind our peeps and coos" and "lost caws".

Oh how I love the silliness of this book. Everyone knows that cats go "meow" and dogs go "woof" and crows go "caw" and little brown birds go "peep". But what if a little brown bird decides to say something that isn't "peep", something silly like "froodle"? Yes yes yes to this one. The little bit of a rhyming game the birds start to play would be a fun way to get kids practicing their rhyming skills while being silly. Just great.

Yay, even birds can be silly!
