Froodle

Antoinette Portis

3.89 AVERAGE

Froodle features a group of birds that begin to explore new sounds. At first, the little brown bird ventures to make a new sound. Soon, the dove and the cardinal join little brown bird. Crow cannot accept these new noises and leaves the group. Crow soon returns and joins the fun.
Froodle would be appropriate for young children between birth and six years old. Portis provides character development among the group of birds and young children will enjoy experimenting with the new sounds that the birds test. The alliteration and internal rhyming make the book appropriate for children developing phonemic awareness. Older readers may appreciate some of the jokes in the book, such as the dove that offers the olive branch to the others and tries to keep the peace. Young readers may not understand the gist of this humor.

Utterly adorable!

Little sparrow teaches the lesson to the other birds that it's ok to be different - to break away from tradition.

A smart, cute story of four birds, who sometimes don't want to live up to the typical expectations of their roles (to caw, coo, chip, peep). And when the little bird decides to be more creative, the effect on the rest of the birds entertains. Touches on themes related to being one's own self, not needing to follow the crowd, and going beyond expectations by letting loose. A fun picture book.

The world is made up of rebels and rule-followers. Little Brown Bird is a rebel. Crow is a rule-follower.

I like most of Antoinette Portis' books, but I couldn't really get into this one. The nonsense words were a little rough to read out loud and the colors didn't keep the attention of my 8 month old the way the illustrations in many of her other books did.

February 2016 - liked imitating the sounds.

December 2016 - Ben thinks it's absolutely hilarious - he's really into silly nonsense words, so this is perfect.

Warning, may cause incoherent giggling. Awwww, yeah.
