The afterword was more significant to me than most of the story. It was slow and tedious in the first half, but all came to fruition with a quick ending. Still an interesting piece of historical fiction.
I enjoyed reading this and learning about the smart and strong Eliza. I had no idea this was based on truth until the end. I struggle with having admiration for anyone having slaves as the reality of such is wrong and disgusting. I’m glad I stayed with the story to learn her truth and her full contribution to South Carolina.
Book.
I LOVED this book. The author did a marvelous job of melding the real person, Eliza Lucas Pinckney into a beautiful story. I fell in love with Eliza’s incredible character & strength.

Based on true events and stories of Eliza Pickney, a young woman hidden in history who ran her father’s plantation in his name in his absence when she was 16. She rejected two terrible suitors and worked alongside their family’s slaves to grow indigo, making it a major export for the US around the time of the Revolutionary War. You. Go. Girl.

First off, I should confess I only read about a third or less of this book.
I don't think it is the book's fault that I didn't get into it. The plot is quite good, as is the writing. I think Eliza has a very interesting voice, as it is a balance between a proper girl for her time and age as well as someone who just really wants to be free and have their way in life.
I just feel like maybe the build up of the story is a little slow, and maybe that is why I couldn't manage to get past it.

Based on true events and people. Great narrator and a fascinating story. Reminds me of My Name is Resolute by Nancy Turner.
