An interesting perspective on the years prior to Hitler's taking over of Germany. Told from the viewpoint of a 17 year old girl, a favorite of Hitler's, and the lie she sets out to unravel.
Hitler for all purposes was an unremarkable man who between the years of 1918 and 1934 became this unstoppable force, with charismatic speeches and loyal followers who struck out the opposition with precision. Anne Blankman takes Gretchen Müller (a fictional character who is close to Adolf Hitler) and has her slowly come to the realization just how wrong his ideology is, an ideology she grew up believing.
Gretchen finds herself isolated from friends and family as she delves deeper into finding out who her father was and Hitler really is. She aligns herself with people who she was told all her life were poison. As Gretchen navigates through rallies, lies, and witnessing the brutal beatings carried out by the NSDAP, it makes the fear tangible. It grips you and won't let go. Anne Blankman wields this fear and these situations to show how trodden people will grasp out for any kind of hope, and how easy it is to swallow lies to focus on a common enemy, who to an outsider isn't an enemy at all.
Prisoner of Night and Fog is book a you read to gain insight into Germany, yes it's fiction, but so much of the historical fiction in this time period is focused on the Allies. We mustn't forget Germany and its people. Anne Blankman does this perfectly, through Gretchen who refuses to keep swallowing the lies, through Ava who blindly follows, Reinhard and Kurt who are model Nazis, and to the Jews and Communists that battle Hitler's ascent to power.

This was a book I really enjoyed but for whatever reason, I couldn't sit down to read it. I liked how realistically they portrayed all the girls in the book. I liked that all the girls were exactly the same, they all had their own personalities. I liked seeing how Gretchen's thoughts changed through out the book. At the beginning, she was completely trusting of Hitler and everyone in the Party, but by the end, she only knew that she could trust Daniel. It was a good book and showed how one girl from Germany may have thought about Hitler and Jews. It was interesting seeing that maybe everyone was brainwashed by Hitler and his speeches, and really didn't know about the extermination of the Jews.

Wow. Prisoner of Night and Fog had a kind of eerie awesomeness that only Nazi Germany can bring out.
I had high hopes for this one and it didn't fail to disappoint! As far as historical fiction goes, the historical accuracy aspect of it was perfect and the way the fictional characters were developed around real people and events was amazing.
Definitely looking forward to the sequel.

This story was so much more than I expected. The love between Daniel and Gretchen is so pure. It was probably my favorite part of the story. Not only does this story address political tension and murder, but it is also a story of self-discovery, friendship, sacrifice, bravery and love. As a psychology minor, I loved the aspect of psychopathy in this story. This was gripping, haunting, angering, and wholesome all at once. I absolutely love Gretchen and Daniel, and I can’t wait to read the sequel once I find the time to do so.
