Book TW: animal abuse, alcoholism, sexual assault and dismissal of the sexual assault.

No Judgements was the fun, romantic and pet filled break I needed from reality. It did have some heavier content in it than I had been expecting, but it wasn't overwhelming. This novel wasn't perfect, but it made up for what it lacked with the number of adorable pets in it, and kept me entertained to the point where I read most of it in one sitting.

No Judgements follows Bree, a waitress who escaped her old life to live on Little Bridge Island in Florida, after a series of events that made her want to start over. She ends up deciding to stay during a hurricane and falls in love while rescuing the animals that were left behind with her bosses' nephew, Drew. I liked both main characters, but never quite fully fell in love with them the way I like to. They were both funny and charming in their own ways though, and fiercely independent. There were cute moments between them and reoccurring jokes that warmed my cold, dead heart and helped breathe life into the story.

Little Bridge Island itself was amazing, it made me wish it was real so I could go visit it. It was one of those rare times when the setting of the book actually feels like a character too, and it was such a surprise to me. I re-read Bridal Boot Camp before I started No Judgements, and it just added to the charm of the island, though I don't think it's necessary to read beforehand in the least. I really, really loved how the setting led to Bree figuring things out for herself and getting through her problems with the help of it's inhabitants and gorgeous beaches.

I loved all of the characters' passion for animals, but one part of the book drove me nuts.
Spoiler Rick had actively been abusing his dog and pretty much the whole town besides Drew knew about it and did absolutely nothing. I almost DNFed when I got to that part of the book because it pissed me off so much. Cabot expected us to believe that Bree and the rest of the Hartwells were such animal lovers, but sat by and let a man kick his dog and not feed or water him. It made literally no sense and made me instantly dislike Bree and everyone else, even if I eventually warmed up to them again. The only one who had any sense when it came to the animal abuse and sexual assault was Drew, who was rightfully angry about them (one of his best qualities was him wandering the island and adopting any dog he thought needed rescuing).

I wished that Bree had talked to Drew about his language use that made her uncomfortable too, instead of having her just happily accept it at the end and think it was endearing. The gay couple, Patrick and Bill were a bit stereotypical for my taste too. They weren't terribly written, but I expected better for a book published last year, even if I've just gotten used to ownvoices rep.

No Judgements was a story about finding your home and your passion, filled with kind people, pets and two clowns (I mean this in the nicest way) falling in love. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a romance with pets or a small town feel to it, or a romance about figuring out what you want out of life.

It was as bad as can be without me abandoning ship. Weird plot, unnecessary exposition, I didn't like any of the characters. Also, let's face it, I'm no animal lover. This was never gonna be a match made in heaven.

Here's the thing, if you sell the book as 'Main character [Bree] doesn't evacuate for a cat 5 hurricane but instead saves all the abandoned pets. No questions, no judgement', we really shouldn't have to read HALF of the book before getting to that premise.

HALF OF THE BOOK and she doesn't rescue one pet. Unless, you count separating Socks/Bob from his alcoholic owner.  Which we don't (count it).

But, I kept reading.
Also, on the back of the book it says "[...] when Bree's ex shoes up just she is falling hard for Drew, she has to ask herself if their steamy connection is just a passing storm-", which to me, sounded like she was really going to be caught in an emotional tone of uncertainty between the two men.  But, there was no uncertainty, she wanted nothing to do with Caleb (small relief we didn't have to go into a love triangle scenario).  In fact, she's pretty cool and level with him.  Now, with Kyle she's a bit unhinged, which is a bizarre turn only for the fact that the way she talks to him isn't a way I expected from our MC.

Also, Caleb & Kyle don't show up until the end of the book.  So we have this weird confrontation scene, only to then meet Judge Justine AND THEN ALSO meet Bree's bio mom.  It was just a lot right after the other and I'm not sure it was all that necessary.

And yet, I finished reading it.
Better than the last book I read, (thought it's getting the same rating).
Definitely going to forget about this book quickly though.
