I found this a cute enough romance story, but the scene where Bree confronts Kyle felt so not only out of character, but tonally dissonant overall, that it honestly kind of ruined the rest of the book for me. My thoughts after reading were basically "What the hell do you expect me to do with this, Meg???" It really felt like it was supposed to be an empowering moment ... but that's not the kind of empowerment I'm looking for out of my romantic comedy reading! Yikes!

My childhood favorite author, Meg Cabot, did not stand up. The story is very male-gaze heavy, and included the worst sex scene reflecting disappointment of sex with men, portrayed as a positive. It's an easy read, but verbiage is repetitive and not descriptive.

So hilariously bad it almost circled back into being good again

3.5

Cabot's customary humor comes through in this contemporary romance set during a hurricane on an island in the Florida Keys. Bree feels like an islander even though she's only been there a few months (on the run a traumatic event and newly discovered information about where she comes from), so when a hurricane sets a course for the island, she decides to stay and take care of her medically vulnerable cat. Drew is a native to the island and fresh off a break-up when Bree crosses his path as everyone hunkers down to prepare for the storm. The "No Judgements" title comes through in many situations involving the main characters, and is a nice thread that runs through as the characters talk their way around the nuanced perspectives of situations, such as why pet lovers would choose to leave their pets when they evacuate. The setting was interesting, the hurricane brought welcome tension and close proximity situations, and the romance was satisfying in this breezy, perfect for the beach romance. Meg Cabot used to be an auto buy author for me. I liked her middle grade, YA and adult books, especially the Princess Diaries, the Queen of Babble and the Heather Wells series. I still adore her as a person and follow her on FB. But her newer books no longer do it for me. I don‘t find them as funny and engaging.

This was a nice story about nice people living through a hurricane. If you want to know how to prepare for a hurricane, then this is the book for you. Also it is really lovely to read about the community spirit.

The heroine finds the perfect man, hesitates for a while until finally realizing that there is actually no good reason to hold back.

There are many cute pets, adorable teenagers, lovely friends and lovable if sometimes annoying family members.

The issues the heroine struggles with are very real, it is great how she finally deals with them and how her new boyfriend supports her. They now have the perfect life and will be happy forever.

So why only the three stars? Because throughout I was slightly bored. Sorry.

A funny, sweet romance

The main characters are stuck together because a hurricane has washed out access to the island where they live (other people live there too).

Bree came to the island to escape a build-up of bad stuff in her life, and Drew’s family lives there.

I mean, there’s nothing bad to say here. Animal lovers? Check
Good secondary characters? Check
Communicative gentleman? Check
Community involvement? Check
#metoo message? Check

Okay, that last one didn’t quite gel, and there’s a storyline with Bree’s mom that doesn’t really get resolved, but overall, it’s a quick, fun read.

I received this book as a digital arc from netgalley

Well, it wasn’t perfect. But I flew through it and enjoyed it. Sometimes, that makes the perfect book.

What the actual heck did I just read
