Meg Cabot

3.28 AVERAGE

This book was really sweet and skipped a lot of the troupes that usually turn me off from Cabot’s books.

I loved the small island setting, with its sense of community. However, I'm glad this is not my first Meg Cabot book, because based on this, I never would have picked up another one. My problem was with the stubborn main characters, who seem to put themselves in unnecessary danger by not evacuating before the hurricane. He berates her for trying to stay put in an evacuated apartment complex while staying at his house on the beach so that he could repair damages during the storm. She eventually stays with his aunt and uncle who own the cafe where she works, with her rescue cat Gary who was adorable but also rather far fetched. And together they embark on a mission to save the pets who were left behind by evacuees. Along the way their mutual taunting become instalove or instalust. Sabrina aka bree has some unresolved issues with her famous mother and her ex boyfriend, but all those ends are resolved very briskly towards the end of the book. Lets just sum it up by saying that I felt very judgmental towards many issues the book raises and how it raises them. It felt like it wanted to touch on heavier subject matters but didn't strike the right tone or format.

Cw: dead parents, sexual abuse/harassment

Really wanted to give this 5 stars because I love Meg Cabot and have never been disappointed in any of her books, but there were just a couple of things that I couldn't ignore, like the sheriff putting a curfew in place "to make everybody happy", but I couldn't really find a reason why he would do that except to make it so that Bree would have to spend the night at Drew's. There were a couple other small things, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and loved that the main character found a partner that supported her dreams and accepted her for who she was. Also loved that she successfully confronted her abuser.

Also want to add that the family members don't die in the book and the sexual assault is only described in passing because it happened before the storyline in the book, but it is discussed so please be aware if that is triggering for you.

Super light and easy to read

Cute breezy read. Meg Cabot does adult romance as well as she does YA fiction.

I haven’t read a Meg Cabot book in quite awhile. I really enjoyed this one and remembered why I liked her books. It was a perfect light, fun summer read. Loved the Florida Keys setting and the quirky characters on the island. And lots and lots of pets. What’s not to like?
funny lighthearted slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Never read this author before. A very light rom com which is what I was looking for. There is an incident of sexual assault that happened in the past, but it seemed to be breezed over with the exception on one scene. A fact I didn’t like.

A lite, cute, classic Meg Cabot read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
