I love a book set on or by the ocean.

This was a mess. Normally, I'm a sucker for romances, especially with the backstory of 'girl running away from an awful ex and finds a guy who is a much better human being,' but by the end I just keep saying "wtf" every few pages.

1) the couple didn't really have a build up to liking each other or falling in love. There was nothing but sexual tension between them, and then suddenly they were in love?

2) I love books that have a woman who has been hurt finding a new person and working through her trauma to be with them. This should have fell into that category, but it was too unbelievable. Everyone deals with their trauma differently, but pulling a gun on the man and shooting the tequila? It was so unbelievable I almost felt like laughing. It also made it seem like certain men will never listen to a woman unless she's holding a gun, and then they'll think everything she's said is because she's a "crazy bitch," which just makes things worse. Everything about that scene made me cringe, because despite it being something many woman probably wish they could do to their attacker, there are far better ways to portray confronting attackers in a healthy (but still vengeful) way.

3) What was with Bri's character? She wanted to live an anonymous life, yet immediately told Drew about her mom as soon as possible. She was also unreasonably argumentative, and it drove me nuts to read every little argument.

4) Both of her mothers show up?? What?? Why was this part even included? We didn't need the DNA drama. There was enough drama with her LITERALLY THREATENING TO SHOOT SOMEONE and the ACTUAL HURRICANE COMING THROUGH.

5) And finally, oh god, the sex. Not just that one scene, but everything to do with the sexual tension with them. It was weird, awkward, and cringeworthy. "fireworks in your panties??" Please give me the sweet release of death rather than read that 17 times in one book. And nothing about the sex scene was sexy. It was uncomfortable to read because it didn't read loving or in any way realistic. Which is saying something, because most romances don't include realistic sex scenes, but this felt like it was written by a guy who has no idea how women's bodies work. If you can't make it at least an okay sex scene, just skip it, rather than forcing us through that.

2 stars only for Gary. Gary is great and I'd read an entire book only about Gary.

There were a few things that bothered me while reading, such as the MC's extreme stubbornness. I am fairly stubborn myself and love it when female MCs are as well, but for this book, she seemed to be stubborn for the sake of stubbornness. It also seemed that the towns people were a little too flippant about the storm, especially since they all claimed to have been through a few large ones.

I've loved a lot of Meg's other books so this one fell a little short for me. I also didn't quite feel the connection between the FMC and love interest. But I did love all of the animals and Gary was my favorite.

Not the worst, but not the best.

2.5 stars- I hate to say it, but I was disappointed with this one. I’ve loved all of Meg Cabot’s other works, and this one just fell a bit flat. The romance aspect felt forced, and the main characters and their dialogue annoyed me a bit.

TW: sexual assault, animal abuse

Loved this book. This is my first read for Meg Cabot and I was not disappointed. She had me engaged from the beginning. I checked this book out from my local library, it was on the new releases shelf. I am glad I grabbed it, I cannot wait for the second book in the series.
I love the chemistry between Drew and Sabrina. I love the details of what happens during the hurricane and how the island comes together to help each other. It was a great story and you should read it!

I believe that listening to this on audio really killed this book for me, unfortunately. The narrator sounded like a cross between Amazon Alexa and iPhone Siri. She was completely robotic, which took the sarcasm and sex appeal right out the window. It was definitely lost in translation – literally. I had to actually look up the audiobook to see if it was a robot reading it or if it was an actual person, and apparently she’s a real voice actor. I guess I’ve been spoiled with Jim Dale reading the Harry Potter series--he’s so animated and expressive that I could listen to those over and over again.

Anyway, back to this book. I believe in anything Meg Cabot wants to do. I love her – always have and always will. But this was not my favorite. I’ve read better from her. Again, I know this review is absolutely skewed because of the format in which I consumed this content, but it just didn’t have all the right elements. The story was great and cute and I was ready for a solid 3.5 review, but then the last 15% came out of left field and I thought it didn’t fit with the rest of the book.
I see that there is a “Little Bridge Island” series—at least a second book already out… and I can’t say I’m immediately adding it to my TBR. (Pun intended.)

**Spoiler starts here

Diving further into why I thought the last 15% of the book just didn’t match at all… I mean, threatening a guy with a gun to his head?! That was WILD. I had to rewind and be like wait am I hearing this? Is this a fever dream? What’s happening?? And then Bree’s mom showed up and she was like “I have 2 moms” and I’m like no one thinks that way. You have a birth mother and you have your real mom who raised you. In this case, you have an egg donor – not even an adoptive mother. It was just weirdly dramatic and I thought it didn’t flow with the light rom-com type of book we were getting.

Also, just NEVER let Alexa or Siri dictate a sex scene. It’s not hot. It was actually not written badly by Meg or cringey but the way I heard it was like oh… no. Sis, that ain’t it.

The story was cute and cheesy and fully what I expected it to be. If you like Meg Cabot, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this. I would just highly recommend reading a physical copy.

Wow, this was kinda bad. The two main characters had no chemistry. Bree was impertinent to Drew in practically every conversation, I could not understand why these two couldn’t keep their hands off each other. Didn’t want to inconvenience anyone but put herself in a potentially life threatening situation she was in no way prepared to deal with.

Plus she seemed like a mary sue: gorgeous law school drop out, well to do parents, natural artistic talent, can shoot a gun and pick locks. Thank you, next.

The commentary on sexual assault was a welcome conversation. Bree is a survivor and stuck to her guns (literally) when everyone around her was saying she was overreacting.

This is pretty cute. A fun little read! Although it did make me a bit anxious for a while because hurricane.

RomCom light and passion driven

I will start this off by saying I am a huge Meg Cabot fan and when a new book comes out every other book I am reading or about to read is forgotten because Meg comes first!

So this is the story of Bree who moves to Little Bridge Island after her boyfriend and mother don't take her seriously after something happens to her (vague I know but doing my best not to spoil anything). She cuts off all contact and off she goes.

She starts working at the mermaid cafe and soon has many friends on the island and is settling in nicely. She also gets to know her boss's nephew Drew Hartwell, known as little bridges heartbreaker.

A big hurricane hits Little Bridge and it leaves the island cut off from the main land with no power. Bree realises that quite a few of the Islands residents evacuated without their pets and so she sets out to take care of all the animals she can with the help of the dreamy Drew Hartwell.

This is the perfect book romance and animals, what's not to love!? I really adored this story and must say perhaps it's one of the best of Megs books. I also loved that there was a sneak peak of the next book in the series.

Plus there is a recipe for the hurricane dip and lemon pudding cake mentioned in the book as well which I thought was a great addition.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an Arc copy in exchange for an honest review.
