I feel like this book was much better written than the first one and I think it's mainly due to the fact that this book was much bigger in terms of page numbers than the first one. I enjoyed being able to see Eragon grow as a character while he realistically stays a little immature. It would be nice to if his obsession with Arya would disappear and I certainly hope they don't end up together.
That's not to say it's perfect. The beginning in particular was rather jarring in how it just starts off right away with Ajihad's death. It's understandable that he no longer had a purpose within the series but there could have been a much more effective - not to mention moving - way to handle this. The set up with Murtagh and the Twins was also a little obvious. I was fully aware that they would return if not by the end of the novel then sometime later in the series. I will say, though, I was surprised that Eragon was revealed to be Morzan's son and not Galbatorix's son.
This leads into two other problems I've had with the series so far: expression of emotions through the text and character depth. A lot of times if felt as if the emotions in the narrative were merely told to me rather than expressed in a way that I could truly feel them myself. Usually when a character dies, the narration is written in such a way that I feel the pain the living characters feel. In this book, whenever someone died, it didn't leave much of impact. But I think this is directly tied to the idea of character depth or that many of the characters don't have depth at all. Obviously Eragon and, in this book, Roran are given more attention than the other characters but that simply makes characters like Orik feel flat and a stereotypical fantasy character. Hrothgar is a another example in which his death had little impact because for me there wasn't much of a connection to made with him.
I plan to finish the series although it will take me a while as I'm used to 400 to 500 pages and not much more than that. The lore and story are set up so far that despite what I feel the series lacks it still keeps me invested.
