The Strain by Chuck Hogan, developed from a story by Guillermo del Toro is a paperback book (after so many Kindle books, I know, I'm aghast!) I had gotten from a $5 paper sack sale at a local library. 'Tis the season for spooky books, I guess.
I had begun reading this book for pleasure between advance reader copies that I've finished and am expecting soon and also because I'm a big fan of the concept that del Toro thinks up (what can I say; being Mexican, I appreciate the art of a fellow Mexican). The story is very much an ensemble piece - a big bad and many minion bads being fought/wrangled in New York by an elder sage professor who had underwent the Holocaust and fought big bads before, a physician with a very similar job to Brad Pitt's character in World War Z, a female physician, and a gritty Russian American vermin exterminator. It's worded very cinematically, but this group of people is consistently and almost nauseatingly marginalized and underminded wherever they go ("Oh, there's NO WAY this crisis will go out of hand," "We just HAVE to arrest you at this most climactic time," "Things cannot go any worse than this," or "We can't possibly believe you when you say that things are going to turn out terribly"), so that, I believe, is its biggest strength and most obvious flaw.

I think I've never read a 600 page book so fast. Review to come.

The audiobook was horrible. It was monotone with no feeling or hard reaction. The preformed read it like he was bored to death even when something gruesome was happening. It was also hard to follow at part too. Ill be switch to the physical books from here to see of they are better with my own internal dialogue.

Although the book was fine, it took me forever to get through it, it just didn't have the pull for me to pick it up and carry on with it. Forced myself in the end, not a bad read but not particularly gripping.
Another take on vampires. A plan lands and all the passengers appear to be dead. While taking the passengers out of the plane it becomes apparent that there are 4 survivors. They are quarantined, but quickly end up at home with their families. The first night after the tragedy all the bodies end up missing from the morgue. This begins a journey to find out what is happening and how to stop the epidemic. I really loved the book. At times it was full of violence and some images I would rather not imagine, but it did keep me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait for the remaining books.
Did get a little clunky at times and possibly a couple too many of the individual experiences but overall was very entertaining and the beginning was very reminiscent of the Stand by Stephen king
