3.62 AVERAGE

This is a novel about modern day vampires. However, there are no sparkly vampires involved. This is vampirism portrayed as a deadly virus of pandemic proportions.

Guillermo Del Toro and Chuck Hogan have rewritten the rules in the first book of their trilogy. There are several viewpoints portrayed throughout the length of the book, but the main storyline follows Eph (a CDC doctor) as he struggles to understand just what's going on... and the eventual shift in mindset that this new threat requires of him.

This is the first novel in what will eventually become a trilogy. The second book, "The Fall", is already on shelves and the third book ("The Night Eternal") is scheduled to be released sometime in 2011.

Not the right time to read this book. Maybe I will pick it back up later

I don't know why I waited so long to read this. Its a very interesting and detailed story. It has the underlying supernatural theme but, with science thrown in. I will definitely be getting the next one in the trilogy.

This is my second round with this book. The first time I read this, I got hung up on a technicality and couldn't get past it, so put the book back in the stacks with a "maybe later." This time, I read a little slower and realized that I had been speed-reading through that problematic section and took my time to digest and absorb what was going on. To be fair, this is a gem in the rough. There are still some rough points that could have been edited better and a couple of plot-holes, but it is a good read with an interesting concept.

A 777 lands in New York City with 200-something people on it, and then everything and everyone on board the plane mysteriously drops their shades, and drops dead, leaving our dashing protagonist, a newly-divorced epidemiologist with the CDC to investigate. Interestingly, the plane lands the day before a massive solar eclipse, leaving an avenue for things that go bump in the night to come out and play. This is a vampire story and there are plenty in it; none of them sparkle. There is plenty of violence throughout the book. There is some adult language (and some adult concepts, to be certain), and little to zero alcohol or substance abuse. There are one or two scenes involving sex, but those are very minimal.

I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. The audio version was well narrated and I was invested in the characters.
